2014 S10 here. Clueless as to what they are hearing, but curious. I live down in Honduras where people are sometimes walking alongside the better paved roads. Quite often, while going 40-55 mph, they will turn around and look to see where the sound is coming from. On average, about 150' ahead of me. This happens when no other vehicles are around, so I know it's me. What the heck are they hearing? I have stock Battlewing tires, no motor mods, stock windshield, stock exhaust, Yamaha panniers and the wind deflectors. Could it be the sound of the engine I like so much? Puzzled. Anyone have this experience? Thanks.

Maybe its what they are seeing. Are there other Yamaha Super Tenere's in your area? Any accessories that are different? Sticker's, Reflector's, Music?

I have no idea, in particular if they are turning around and don't see you. Here's a suggestion the next person that does that and is a drop dead certifiable hottie, stop and ask her......

Not seeing me. These are folks walking on the right side of the road....in the same direction as I am riding. Maybe 150' ahead of me they turn around and look to see where this sound is coming from. Gotta be this bike. They don't turn around when I am driving my car. No trick stuff.....completely stock. Guessing it's maybe the engine? Maybe I'll never know. Hard to stop for hotties when the Mrs. Is on the back 95% of the time.

Thanks

Well, answered my own question today. Three different people on 3 different tests at about 35 mph in 4th gear about 200' away.. All said they heard the motor before they noticed any other sounds emitted from the bike. Unlike my Harley buddy, where they heard his pipes first. Curiosity squelched.

Done.

So I guess with the Tenere, the saying goes "loud motor saves lives". LOL. :D

...Except that Koinz is having a laugh, whereas Scott's Harley buddy is an idiot.

Small differences...

yes, S10 - its as good as air cooled - a very small water system, not much more than 2 litres and the rad is most of that, and no radiator up front so the sound doesn't have much to stop it getting out, add to the cam chain thingy

mine was a rattler when new but sounds good now to the point that I wont change the exhaust as I like the sound so much!! I can see why test rides on new bikes put some off!

Thanks, Trainman. Not that it's irritating or anything like that. In fact I like the growl/grunt sound. You pretty much answered it. I was just curious as to why so many pedestrians are turning around, knowing it wasn't likely the exhaust note.
