While I've pretty much enjoyed the S10, The bike I was looking @ the time was a Versys1000.
I never take the S10 off road so I really don't need it's full capabilities and I miss 4 cyl smoothness.

Can't find a dealer that even wants to take a S10 in cause all they do is sit around forever! They don't stock them for that very reason.
At least in central VA.
The S10 was my first 'new' bike even though it was a 3 year holdover. So now it's a 5 year old bike!
I'll probably have to keep it or take a big hit on a 13K mile bike.
I guess that's the benefit of buying used in the first place!
Live and learn. ::001::

Sell your bike privately.

I've sold a rocket 3 in the middle of winter once in Ontario. Dealers won't ever give you a good price for a trade in!

Sometimes it comes down to how far you're willing to go. I live in southern NC, and went all the way to Romney Cycles in West Virginia to trade my V-Strom in on a Super Tenere. They gave me the Blue Book value for my Suzuki, and they beat the price that all the dealers in NC were giving for the Yamaha. They seem to cater more to the adventure bike segment than a lot of other dealers, so maybe they are more inclined to take an ADV bike in trade.

It's true that usually you'll get more in a private sale than a trade, provided you're able to sell the bike. I had an '04 Harley Road King on the market for almost a year, listed in places like Craigslist, Chopper Exchange, Cycle Trader, etc, with almost no interest. It was priced well below Blue Book; in fact, for a while, it was the lowest priced Road King on Chopper Exchange. Still, I had to deal with ridiculous offers, like "I'll give you $2500.00 for it, if you'll finance it". Maybe not a big deal when you're in the business of buying and selling bikes, but when you just want the thing out of the garage so you can put a new bike in there, getting silly lowball offers is a pain in the ass.

I don't know how far you are from Romney, WV, but it might be worth a call to them to see if they have a Versys, and where they stand on a trade in.

Yes, some dealers are better than others and some sell mainly one style than others.
I got $5500 for my 06 Yamaha Royal Star Tour Deluxe with 30K on the clock, which I though was a decent price for that old and miles,
AND got a good price on the Tenere. ($9800, they just wanted to get rid of it)
I don't think I'll get that on this swap even though the S10 is a more expensive bike than a Versys 1000!

May have to start looking a little further away for other dealers.

Have you put it up for sale here on the forum?

Price it to sell, and it will.

Exactly. Depending on specs, price it between $6000 & $7000, and it will move.

I'm willing to bet you could trade it with an individual for a Versys. There has to be a few people out there who wanted a S10, but had to settle for the Versys due to cost.

That's funny cause I was able to get my new S10 cheaper than a V1K 2 years ago. That's why I ended up with it.

Don't get me wrong, I've really liked the S10, at least after I sorted out the damn clutch vibration.
That really worried me when I bought it. Thought I just bought a shitty bike.
Luckily I found this site and got the dealer to fix it for free!

There are a few people on the V1K site that had an S10, and some comments were like "...never gelled with that engine."
I can relate to that.
Hard to have any other complaints than that. Overall a great machine.
I just want to LOVE the engine on the bike I'm on! ::26::

Definitely get the bike with the engine that you love, no need to ever apologize! Personally, I have NEVER liked 4 cylinder power... I've owned a couple of bikes like a CB900F, ST1300 and my brother had a Hayabusa back in the early 2000's that I used to ride as well... Sure, they are all very powerful, (Exept the ST1300 Lol) and have super smooth engines that make good mid or top end power, but its just a personal preference thing. I much prefer Twin engine power, I like the sudden or immediate low end power, the vibrations, the sound and the personality... this is actually what brought me to be interested in the S10 in the first place, I liked that it wasn't a Triple and I liked that it sounded like a metric cruiser with a good pipe..

To each their own, get what you enjoy best! Hope you manage to get exactly what your looking for ::001::

That's why I want to test ride one.

Although, if I test rode my S10 before I bought it, I wouldn't have bought it...............that clutch vibration was crap!
.........until I found out what it was and got it fixed!

He is wanting me to take it for a ride , but the day I rode over to his place the wind was nasty so I told him next time I'm over.
He rode mine but that day it was 32F out and he came right back.
I told him we will trade and go for a nice long ride soon.

I can vouch for the Ninja 1000 highway vibration problem, I owned one a couple years ago and it would put my hand to sleep within 10 minutes. The bike had a lot of power and was very comfortable, but the vibrations drove me nuts (and this is after changing the countershaft sprocket to drop the revs on the highway). I also found it odd that for a large bike with a lot of torque it was geared like a 600 sport bike.

Just as a thought, the newer-improved-version (16MY)has less 'buzzyness' about it. I did ride one, only a short 30min ride, and it was fantastic, but the ergos and no cruise, I went with another S10.

I can't remember which one of us had a Gen 1, and just bought a '17. I am wondering if he thinks the '17 needs a re-flash like the Gen 1. Specifically the issue about no power below 3k. It doesn't feel sluggish, but I have nothing to compare it to. "T" IS sluggish, but "S" feels like a different bike; in a good way.

I think you'll find the Gen2 is improved on fueling enough that the flash has been less desired.

But you'll also find the flash is still an improvement that draws the same happy customer responses.

Never rode a Gen1. Did my '16 NEED a reflash? Short answer, no. I'm sure I could have stayed happy with it as it was. But S-mode needed improvement as it required a fine calibration of the wrist to get a smooth ride, and it was really tough at lower speeds. Since a reflash was available and there wasn't one negative comment about it, I went for it. The reflash makes T-mode smoother and a little livelier down low. It really improves S-mode. Smooth ramp up strong up top. I can keep it in S-mode eveywhere now. It makes an easy bike to ride, even easier. I'm very glad I did it.

Absolutely, get the ECU to Anthony, it will be the best couple hundred bucks you can spend on a Gen 1 bike.
