New year, new bike

For a few weeks now, I've been debating buying a S10. This weekend, I put quite a bit of thought into it, and looked around at my options. It came down to a S10, or a 2010 R1200GS w/ 30k miles. I figured that I could get either for about the same price ($11995 was the ask for the GS).

I really thought long and hard, and went back and forth about which I really wanted. Reality is, I am more keen on the looks of the GS vs the S10. But then there's the maintenance on the BMW, which from past experience, I know to be about $1,000 every 12,000 miles for scheduled maintenance. On the S10, I figure scheduled maintenance will probably be around $500, even if I do it all at the dealer (so as to compare apples to apples). So the S10 offers half the cost for maintenance. Plus, I get a brand new bike vs. a bike with 30k miles, and while I am not sure, probably out of warranty.

In the end, this morning, I purchased a new 2013 grey S10. I only have 55 miles on it so far, but I love what I've seen of it. I am very happy with the purchase, and think that it will be a great bike for me. Oddly enough, in those 55 short miles, the bike has already grown on me. I REALLY enjoyed the ride. It handles curvy roads well, it's fine on city streets, and is comfortable. I think this is a bike that will only get better in time.

Happy new year, all.

Hope you're as smitten in a few thousand miles as many have been. Take it on some real adventure rides. That will almost guarantee it.

Congrats

Congrats on the new bike. I went thru much the same process last February and decided on the S10. It keeps getting better as the miles add up. Hope you enjoy your bike as much as I have mine.

Good choice, the S10 is on par with the last of the aircooled GS models (2010 - 2012) and a new bike for the cost of a used one has to be a no brainer.

I weighed up S10 Vs 2012 GS as a GS with ABS / TC in the UK was actually cheaper than the S10 brand new, but ex demo and pre-reg S10's could be had for about £2k less, whereas an Ex Dem GS was only a few hundred quid cheaper.

My 2008 GS made the decision for me with a gearbox leak just before the 18k service and ABS / Front end issues just after the service on top of the £1500 of repairs it needed between 6k and 18k - although the dealer told me they had sorted all those problems on the 2010 models - but when I bought the '08 model he told me it was the upgrade version which had fixed all of the issues I subsequently had. They also told me the 12k service was £250 when I was looking at buying bike from them, then when I needed the 12k service it was £400 - but I have now worked out how to tell when a BMW employee is lying to you - their lips move.

An ECU Flash puts the engine way ahead of the twin cam GS, in stock form I think the GS motor is a bit nicer with a better top end and no restrictions in the lower gears, but once flashed the S10 is much stronger from tick-over to redline.

He he, I can only tell you my story. 65,000Kms and no issues. It has been my best investment in a two-wheeler teritory for all the reasons discussed above and else where. I can assure you, you are going to be a very happy person in a very long time. ::015::

Congrats! I bought mine New Year's Eve 2011 and two years later, still love it. Just remember, this engine gets better over time. You will find this bike works its way into your heart.

Btw.. in that 2 years, my bike has never been back to the dealer.. except to pickup an oil filter and BS with the salesman..

Happy New Year!

Interesting points. I too feel that the GS is much better looking BUT Im very pleased I bought the S10. Rasher....I love your comment about you can tell they are lying....coz their lips move....brilliant. Where did you do your re-flash Rasher? Im kind of interested in that coz I find the S10 a bit slow....but I kind of fall asleep when I start reading stuff about the reflash (think Ive got attention deficit.....ahh..yawn whatever it is)...plus Im useless with electrics. Its certainly not something Id trust myself to make a decision on. I need to be persuaded that its a good thing to do. Sorry for hyjacking the thread a bit.

I have completed my first 24 hours w/ the S10. So far, I have 220 miles on it, and I am loving the bike more and more every mile that passes by. Really, it's a phenomenal bike. I can't wait to see how much I like it in a few thousand miles! I didn't have one complaint on my ride today. Literally, nothing that I'd change. ::015::

Congratulations! One of the great beauties of the S10 is the swiss-army-knife-like utility. It can be an FJR or a KLR depending on how you are riding that day. Plus it is a bunch more comfortable than most other bikes.

Congrats TX10....I love mine so far. I am 5 weeks ahead of you on the purchase of my Ten which was Thanksgiving week 2013 and I have about 1k miles so far and have hand built my own boxes and am finishing my custom skid plate so then the miles can really start piling up. I got my 600 mile service done at the dealer just for warranty purposes and then told my wife to start saving for gas and tires because I want to pile on the miles now.

It has continued to grow on me every ride...until I rode deeper sand, then it took a step backwards....until I hit hard pack dirt and tar again...back in love. Just know ahead of time it is not for sand...you CAN ride sand, I have and WILL again, but it is not "fun" per say. Other than that, ::021::
