I picked up a 2014 ES today with 5K miles on it. Came with Jesse panniers, Altrider bars, Yamaha tank bag, tall Yamaha windscreen and wind defectors. This is my second ST the other being a 2012. The only issue I see the bike has is the left Jesse bag lock hits the exhaust cover. Scratched it up pretty good but be panniers look well made. I plan on going ahead and putting on a set of tires and my question is that 90% of my riding will be commuting and traction is my first issue but tire wear is a factor too. You guys that have been through some tires what do you recommend?

The forum still looks great as I have been away a while. Glad to be off the Goldwing and back on the Super T.

Best to go to the tire section of this forum. Lots of info on them. Do a search, and you will get several hundred posts on tires and opinions.

Welcome back to the forum Nightwind.

You know how tire threads go. I've run a bunch of different things on the Super Ten, but mostly Heidenau K60 Scouts just because I like how well they last and the on/off road abilities. I got a consistent 12k out of the rears and was pleased with how the fronts wore, usually getting 20k from the fronts before I opted to swap them out. I'm getting better mileage from the Mitas E07 Dakar in the rear. Over 13k and still going, but getting close to end of life. Fronts wear decent if you keep the pressure up around 36. (I run 36F/42R on everything due to load)

I wasn't happy with the PR3 Trails I tried, only 6800 miles to cords. The PR4s are supposed to be better, (great in the wet), but still not a 10k rear tire from what I have read. I haven't tried the PR4 as yet. I got 13k from the rear with an Anakee III and liked the performance of those tires, but the front wore in a nasty tri-band that made handling fall off earlier than I liked, starting around 6-7k miles. I'd run another Anakee III rear, but would try something else on the front like a Conti Trail Attack or even a PR4 Trail or Battlewing.

The FJR guys I know that ride similar to me have been getting very good mileage and performance from Pirelli Angel GT tires. I have a set of those going on next to see how the Super Ten likes them. Strictly a road tire, but since the wife stopped wanting to go off pavement, I'm riding mostly road now anyway.

Hope that helps.

Congrats on your new bike. I know how you feel coming off a 960 lb Road Glide. As for tires, ya there are countless threads and everyone has different tastes. I have been rather pleased with the stock Battlewings but I see they are no longer made. They have been replaced by the A40 Battleax. They are supposed to be better than the Battlewing. Others that look good for mostly road use are the Pirelli Scorpion Trail 2, Metzeler Tourance Next, Conti Trail Attack 2, and the Anakee 3.
