Actually this is my second post - but just a quick intro - here goes:

Hello All! My name is Brian Scritchfield. I currently reside outside of the big city of Granville OH. Been here for a little over 16 years. Been riding most of my life - starting riding mini bikes at the age of 5 (current age is 46 - ouch). Spent a lot of time on cruisers until one day when I rode my brothers BMW R1150GS Adventure. At that very moment I was completely hooked on the Adventure style bike. I spent the last few years on 1150/1200 GS's.

How did I end up on a S10 - well the trip this past year to the IMS in Cleveland found me constantly heading back to the Yamaha area and sitting on the Tenere. I loved my GS - but I wanted something that didn't require quite the upkeep as far as valve adjustments - plus the S10 was just a really cool looking bike (my vanity showing through a bit). Ordered one up from my close friend Kevin Mishey at Mid-Ohio in Mt.Vernon and now the next adventure begins.

So where am I in regards to farkles:

- SW Motech Aluminum cases
- Fender Extender
- Oxford heated grips (why heated grips are not standard baffles me)
- California Scientific windshield
- Corbin Seat (on order)
- Zumo 220 GPS

Looking forward to really being active on this board....

Let's Ride!!!

Welcome Brian. I'm from Van Wert, which is about 2 hours north of Columbus. Hoping to attend some type of Ohio S10 owners Meet-&-greet/adventure ride. I think another Ohio S10 owner has been having monthly rides out of Columbus. I just haven't had the chance to attend one (yet). Enjoy the new bike, I'm loving mine.

Hi Brian and welcome.

Did you buy the "extra" bike Kevin ordered in. Mine came in end of July, bought it from Jim at Mid-Ohio.

I live just up the road from you, 10 mi SW of Mt Vernon. I 'd love to see your bike and the farkles. I'm trying to decide what to get while I save the money for it. You plannin' on doing any of the rides posted by Buckeye56? They're doing one today, Oct 15. Wish I was in town for it.

Anyway, hope to run in to you sometime.

Enjoy your bike....

Brian,

Welcome to the forum! As gunny mentioned, we do a monthly RTE. Unfortunately the last one for this year was today. There will be informal rides as long as the weather holds out. I suggest that you look into cmh-moto.org. It is an email list for central Ohio and there are lots of rides posted there. And if you have the day off or can take it off, I plan to have a Veterans Day ride on November 11th.

Welcome, Brian, from another central Ohioan (Hilliard). As mentioned, check out cmh-moto.org to sign up on the email list. It's good for finding folks to meet up with for a ride. I run it, so feel free to contact me if you have questions.

TWOTIME,

Welcome to the forum! I assume that you are in Ohio? If so, you may want to check out the cmh-moto.org email list for info on local rides. We do monthly RTEs and move the location all around the state. I think they are a good way to meet folks and go for a ride.

Welcome aboard Brian! Anxious to hear some of your comparisons to the GS. What color of SuperT did you get?

Looks like a nice list of farkles you have planned for it!

It's okay if you got a blue one, Brian. Really. You will be neither punished nor ridiculed ... excessively. R

I have Veteran's Day off, so if the weather's decent, I might be able to make it down for this ride. I'll watch your posts for updates. Do your rides normally start from the Columbus area?

We usually broadcast the lunch spot and folks can ride there from wherever they are. It's not unusual to have 2-4 groups from different parts of the state meet for lunch.

My initial impression of the S10 is that it feels a bit more off road(ish) than my GS. The GS was velvet smooth whereas the S10 is a bit raspy and a bit more raw from the motor compartment. I do feel (and I am in no way an expert) that the suspension on the S10 is bit more taut - and as I mentioned the sounds coming from the engine are unexpected (in a good way). I rode the GS sort of like an extended ST....I would do forest roads, but most of time I was running on the smooth stuff. The GS's engine is really smooth - where I do feel a bit more vibes with the S10. Height and weight of the bikes are to me almost the same. Comfort levels on both bikes are pretty close.

The nits on the S10 really are few. I do miss the switch gear on the BMW....especially when riding with heavier gloves (heated grips are installed so the heavier gloves may no longer be an issue). Some folks don't like the quirkiness of BMW's turnsignals - push up to cancel feature...but once you live with it for a while, it really is a nice feature. I don't like how the throttle cables are routed right in front of the dash - but something that most likely can be remedied. HEATED GRIPS....I do a good deal of riding in the 40 degree range and heated grips are must for me. I tried heated gloves - but nah, they seem bulky. BMW grips are fantastic...seamless integration into the bike. I have oxford grips on the bike at the moment...they seem to do an admirable job. Battery location is pretty odd to me - I have hooked up a few things so far to the battery, and the way it's position and how tight everything is shoe horned into that area is taking a little gettin used to.

Service was one item that really pulled me to S10 (outside of it being a pretty cool bike). BMW ownership does require a little thicker wallet. I am no mechanic - outside of spooning on a new set of tires....every 6k service intervals was always a nit of mine - but I wanted to keep the machine in fine running and (warrantable) condition.

Other stuff: I really liked the braided lines on the GS. Both bikes have incredible brakes - the GS had ABS that you could turn off much easier than the S10 (I haven't tried disabling the S10 brakes - read something about how to do it a while back)...

I could really go on - but after riding both bikes, it really is a tough call. I have had 4 GS's and loved them all. I was getting a bit burned out on the service work and really to be honest - wanted to try something new. Would I do it again - get rid of the GS and get an S10 - Yup!!

YES!! this was the "extra bike" that Kevin ordered in. I have known KRM for about 15 years....and I always told him if he had one sitting in his showroom, I would buy it!! We need to hook up for a pre-holiday season ride!!
