New to the forum and to my new location. I am in Prescott, AZ from Indianapolis. I am working at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott. Since I live out in the county, I have discovered the county roads of this area are mostly unpaved and unmaintained. I needed a better bike for the task and selected a 2012 Tenere. Have not taken delivery yet but will have it in a week.

Any suggestions on mods, potential issues, etc., are appreciated.

Welcome to the forum RF. I have a couple of miles on my '12, so can tell you there isn't too much to worry about. Sometime before 50k you should update the Cam Chain Tensioner, (CCT). The original is known to fail, but will give you plenty of warning.

There have been some recall issues, headlight harness and fuel pump o-ring, but both of those should have been taken care of by now.

Our radiator & fan is on the left side, so some good crash bars are a sound investment for riding off pavement. Even a mild drop can stick the fan against the radiator, causing it to quickly burn out if you are not aware enough to check it and free it up before riding on.

Check your spokes! If the bike has less than 6I on it, its common for some to work loose. 52 in/lbs is the torque spec. 5mm allen socket and an extension does the job. Just doing the"ping test" will quickly find any loose ones.

Search the forum, there is a wealth of information here. Don't be shy about sending someone a P.M. if you have questions about an old thread or post.

You're living in an awesome area to own a motorcycle. I've ridden out your way several times; I thought I was going to cook the brakes on my Road King while negotiating those turns leading into and out of Jerome. Oak Creek Canyon was pretty spectacular too.

Crash bars are a good investment. Opinions differ on the need for a debris shield (you'll usually see them referred to as a skid plate, though most of the ones you see aren't really an actual skid plate); I put one on, because I had one on my V-Strom and it deflected some pretty big pieces of debris from hitting the bottom of my engine. They also give some protection to the oil filter, which is kind of hanging out there in space on the front of the engine. They're a personal preference kind of accessory. I'd say the crash bars are a better initial investment.

I tied my spokes together at their crossover points with zip ties. Tying them together could help keep a loose one from flopping around and doing damage. I've never experienced a loose spoke (yet).

Welcome.

The first thing I did was to add a Touratech crash bars. But the stock bike comes with its own plastic crash guards so no worries if you were to drop it. I can't recommend the TT bars as the front mounting frames are a bit weak and will deflect and deform a little.

I added a Rox Riser type bar risers but I went cheap with a China made one. I filter frequently and needed a tall handle bar to clear the side view mirrors of cars. Some mods to reroute the Clutch and brake hoses are required though but it is manageable.

I did sync'ed the Throttle bodies with a Home made manometer using aquarium hoses and ATF oil. Bike does respond better on the throttle. Tips: if the air screw is fully closed in, it is best not to leave it fully closed, be it the right or left hand side screws as it will cause a off idle stumble. It is more involved from the get go prevent the engine from stalling with the stumble. with the air screws not fully closed, it is very forgiving to having the engine stalled.

Played with the CO settings and that improved the "T" mode from being a lame 250cc performance to a decent usable one. I have added a Akrapovic exhaust and a DNA air filter and the optimum setting seems to be +8 on each cylinders.
