New member interested in ST 1200 etc

I am following the comments and am interested to know more about this bike from the users' perspective.

I do not understand why Yamaha doesn't update the TFT for example, to be on par with KTM... and similar set ups on its own bike line.

It seems as if they are different tribes inside the company that do NOT share technology... OR managers that are 'afraid' of changes...

Other observation is the weight of the bike, IMO could be quite lower at this point, without sacrificing anything.

Man, I don't even know where to start. Your first post is to tell us that our bike needs to be improved? It's one thing to have a Tenere and have a wish list. But to come in here asking why the Tenere is not a KTM or a Beemer, and not have one positive thing to say about the Tenere . . . . on a Tenere forum . . . . you might be in the wrong place.

Many of us here, myself included, have no desire for TFT screens or a lighter weight bike. We like/lover her just the way she is. You are correct in that Yamaha has the means to make the Tenere a very "teched out" bike. Somewhere along the line, they decided to make the Tenere "as is". That also could be one of the reasons that Yamaha has the best reliability. And that, considering that includes Honda, is very impressive.

I didn't take what you said as personal, there's more than a few members that have wished for the same things that you have mentioned. But those members have lived with and ridden their Teneres for years.

Don’t forget that the super Ténéré sells for thousands less than KTMs or BMWs. The savings don’t stop there either. With its proven high reliability and much lower cost of ownership, you’ll spend more time on the road and less time in the dealer’s shop as well.

Jeff, Thanks... it is a great platform that with little touches could be superior to the other brands mentioned without affecting price so much, ex: dash and its software has already been developed in other models, minor cost + better amortization of initial dash development.

Engineers always try to make things better-faster-cheaper, that is our job... I have been at it for 44 yrs.
BTW we live few miles appart, am in Westlake.

I was about to pitch my bike that I'm getting ready to sell, but since it's a Gen 1 and doesn't even have the minor Gen 2 updates I guess you'd not be interested.

I'm not sure how I've been able to ride it to Alaska, Tuktoyaktuk, across the USA, Mexico, complete a few Iron Butt rides, etc without a TFT and with all that old tech?

many of us in this forum having a number of bikes including BMWs and KTM’s and some of us still have them in our stalls. These are some of the most knowledgeable people I’ve ever been around, for adventure bikes and yes there’s minor improvements many of us would like to see but overall as Sierra1 has said we love our bikes for what they are and are not.

You might be happier with a KTM or BMW but as for me I love my S 10

Perhaps you don't know that the ST does not meet the euro5 regulations so it is no longer available in the EU. Of course Yamaha could had improved the ST to meet the euro5 like other brands have done, but they didn't. Sadly, the ST is on the way to extinction. I expect a new more adventurous tracer 900 as a substitute. It's a petty, this bike is good and has a cardan.

The EU rules are going to kill the industry at this pace... it has been always like that, reason: own market 'protection'. Old story.

Each to their own, for one thing the last thing I want on the Tenere is more gadgets and tech. My Tenere has hit the ground so many times now its amazing all it has suffered are cosmetic's. The first scare is the worst now its just another scratch.
I can just imagine a BMW or KTM loaded with tech how it would take the shit and how F'n $$$$$ the stealerships would want to repair their falling apart product.
IT's AN ADVENTURE BIKE not a GEEK PROMQUEEN.
This makes me think of dudes that buy F350, big RAMS or DURAMAX, mount big lift with big boots and the most bush that truck see's is a 100ft driveway. LOL...what a joke.

Knowing that you're an engineer explains a lot. You look at things and see how they can be improved. But, "better" and "improved" when it comes to a motorcycle can be is very subjective. As Mr. Lund said: "each to their own". What you don't know about me, is that I'm very weird. My 4-wheel transportation has always been the most basic vehicle I can get. Manual window, locks, and transmission. I even still use a flip-phone. My wife was surprised when I told her what the Tenere ES features were because as she said: "you don't like fancy things".

I am kinda surprised that we haven't heard from @Dirt_Dad. He was a long time Tenere rider. But he got "the itch" and is now on one of those "superior" bikes; KTM 1290. You might want to message him and get an apples-to-apples opinion on the Tenere v. KTM.
