Hello guys
New member here from the big north!
I’m buying a tenere and some questions pop up, I haven’t seen the answer at least clearly that is why I hope you can help me.
I sold my bike 2 weeks ago (bmw G650gs) and immediately start looking to buy a tenere, now I found one that fit my “needs” and this week I suppose to go and finalize this thing.
However I have some doubts
It is too much 40000km for a ST2012? how many Km do these motors go, before anything mayor?
The guy I will be buying from bought it on April, drove 1000km and is selling it, "family reasons" can be something fishy here? The bike looks fine and has the 40000km service done.
My plan is to buy a ST and do a long trip, so should I weight for something with less km, let say 15000km,? Or doesn’t mater on this big bikes?
The good about one ST with 400000km plus, is that they are affordable and leave me some more room for my trip.
Also as info,
My goal is to start my trip not further than in 2 weeks, (summer is short around here), that is why I’m kind of rushing.
I have been told that I should buy a BMW Gs1200 with those km on it because is a proven bike, have good reselling value and the motor run to 170000km and plus, also if I buy a 05 to 09 they cost about the same as a ST 2012, so for the money I get more, what do you think?
I hope you have some time to answer and give me your opinion, thanks !
Ps. I have had Yamaha before but never a big one, I love my WR450 was a fun bike and bullet proof, my experience with BMW wasn’t bad but on a small bike 650 is not a big deal, nothing important to fix.
Now I’m planning to play mayor league, so I’m not sure if I have the pocket to afford one, even If I can buy one.

Assuming that you meant 40,000 km, not 400,000 km (240,000 miles), we've got a number of members in the 100,000+ mile club. With the shaft drive, liquid cooling, relatively conservative hp, etc; these are basically small high performance car engines and a lot of the bikes are used as tourers and commuters.

I'm trying to sell a bike that I only put a few hundred miles on, because I just never clicked with it. But as a buyer, such low mileage would make me look REAL hard to make sure the bike hadn't been in a flood or something.

I have nothing against BMW per se, and rent them occasionally. But those years for the BMW would be a huge mistake, as they had the rear drives which were prone to failure and other issues. Besides, for roughly $7,300 on a Fly-N-Ride you could pick up an 8,000 mile rock-reliable Tenere!

If you're looking for proven reliability, I don't think there's any other adventure bike out there that will beat the Super Tenere in this respect. The Yamaha has been on the world market for 6+ years now, plenty of time to prove itself and it has with a number of examples exceeding 100,000 miles. The bike you're looking at only has 25,000 miles on it. Unless it's been abused or neglected I would not have any qualms buying it.

I think if you look closely into that "proven" BMW GS you will find it has proven something different than the Tenere has.

Thanks guys for your replays (Sorry Checkswrecks, yes I meant 40,000 km) .
I contact the owner again today and I will go to see it so I can finally decide, In pictures looks really nice will see in person.
I can't keep speculating when the season goes by, I want more riding and less worrying.
let you know soon enough and maybe start posting about my transcanada trip in my new (used) ST2012!
thanks again ::008::

Glad to have you aboard and at least looking. So you are knowledgeable in doing so, ask for his maintenance records. The schedule is in the owners manual and you want to see that he has done his oil changes and such. At 26,000 the bike will be due for a valve check/adjust, which you ought to have done before such a lengthy trip. You probably can get him down on price due to the check being a pain. I've heard various dealer prices for doing it, so would suggest calling yours.

With 25,000 miles, have the cam chain tensioner changed when the valves are checked. The part is roughly $150 and some of the early ones got weak. There are a number of threads about using the 2014+ Gen2 tensioner in the Gen1 (2010-2013) bikes, or installing and setting a manual tensioner. Go to the Power sub-forum here for more info on this and hours of interesting research:

a simple hello, Matias2016, 40,000 kms is nothing for a Super Tenere,
several of us on this forum are well over 100,000 kms, my goal is a minimum 250,000 on my current Super Tenere...
when it comes to engine and drive train reliability, the bmw is not even in the same league,
the Super Tenere engine was designed from the ground up, within the past ten years, using the best technology, [check the specs]
while the bmw's base engine is well over 100 years old, with a few marketing tweaks every so often as too be the next must have...
bottom line, Yamaha has more Dakar Wins than bmw.....

Ok
I'm back from seeing the bike, everything is there, looks good, sound good and he has the records about what was done, all checked out for those km.

The only thing that still bugs me is that he had have it just for 2 month and just now he figured out that family matters, plus no time, work etc. he wont be using it and want to sell??
He seems honest about the condition of the bike, so I assumed the reason is that he needs the money and he don't want to said so I don't low-ball him too much.

I think this is it, just the idea of knowing that in 1 or 2 days I can be driving that ST around and finally start preparing my trip ::015::!! ::012::
Thanks, will keep you posted.

Like others have said 40,000 KM is nothing.
I have 220,000 KM on my Super Tenere and it is every bit as reliable as when new.
I don't hesitate to hop on with the wife and go anywhere.
We just got back from a ride up to Lake Superior and she is riding with me out to the Utah Rally in Sept.
I wouldn't trade this bike straight across for another new 2012. It still feels new to me.
Now for a 2016 that would be a different story.

Could be a lot of things. Maybe the guy wanted to get back into riding after many years and realized after he bought the bike that it scared the crap out of him, or it just wasn't as fun as he remembered. Or maybe a close friend died in motorcycle crash. Or his wife got scared. Bikes can get in people's heads that way and prompt quick sales. Or as you said, could be a financial decision. If I was in your shoes I wouldn't worry about it. If you're really concerned you could always call the place where he had it serviced and talk to the mechanic. I've done that when buying used cars and the service guys have always been honest. They want to keep you as a customer.

Good luck!

Who knows why people sell their bikes. I always wonder about the adds selling a days to weeks old bike that say "getting married", "had a baby", "bought a house", etc. I mean really? They only found out about these things after they bought the bike? ???

Hello Guys
Little update.
First I have to said sorry for asking questions and then do the opposite but I'm happy to said that I went full in, and bought a ST2015 with 7,000km! ::012::!
After a lot of consideration and some doubts about the other ST I reach the conclusion that was kind of now or never so I will do my trip with no worry's and a bike that has guaranty.
Now Im really happy when on the bike and really worry when on my bank :( , In any case if I need money I can do the trip and sale it in 2 month, ho wait....where did I saw that stuation? jaja
Thank you for all your info, I think middle of next week I will be starting, will see how it goes.

ps.
Some days ago I was talking with a family member about my trip and that I was a little worry about the bike etc, and he told me that back home she met this girl (https://www.facebook.com/Belen-y-Filomena-271264826252235/) so that clearly show that the adventure is unrelated to bike or anything else, just go.

Thanks
