Hello,

I'm new here, been surfing in the background for some time though.

My primary ride is a 2009 FJR1300; I know many have moved over from the FJR to the Tenere. Spklbuk here has done quite the job of bashing me over the head with the dual sport bat. I've given in with the recent 'barn find' acquisition of a 2005 DRZ 400 SM. This bike had 1.3 miles on it when it was wheeled into my garage last year. After a long, hard fought battle with the great state of California's DMV, I have a title and plates on the bike. Still working out over 7 years of storage bugs out of the bike, but the first 200 miles have been a blast.

Long range plans - traveling to Alaska via motorcycle - have brought me here and I'm 99% sold on the Tenere being the bike to do it on. I am a little concerned about the weight of the bike in situations where I might need to pick it up (I know, best plan is to not drop it to begin with...). I've given the F800GS a serious look as well. I've ridden the Tiger 800 too. But, with how well the FJR has served me - and taken the abuse I've put it through - there's a solid bit of loyalty pulling me to the Tenere.

To top it all off, during a recent conversation with my CFO (aka wife) about maybe selling the FJR as a means of putting a Tenere in the garage, she completely shocked me with this - 'why sell the FJR? - I mean, you've had more than one motorcycle before' (I used to have a HD Softail along with the 1st FJR). 'why don't you just wait until **our middle daughter** gets settle at college and then look for a deal on a new one?' Yeah, she's a keeper...

Wayne in Michigan...

Welcome and your wife has the right idea. In my mind I would rather deal with the weight when and if it's an issue. The reliability is always an issue. Good luck with your research.

He's quite the character, isn't he!! Told me I shouldn't take the other road into Burkes Garden, VA on my FJR. He was right, but it was one heck of a ride anyways!

Be very careful with what Spklbuk tells you - most of it is the gospel truth!!!!

Welcome from metro Seattle Wayne!

Tenere makes a nice garage companion to the FJR, different tool for different uses... ::022::

Jim has been pretty relentless in his efforts to convince me of the same. It's been like drinking kool aid from a fire hose... That and his desire to have me fiddling with homemade alcohol stoves all winter long...

That's how it starts... then pretty soon you find yourself chasing him all over the forgotten corners of Southern West Virginia with a mile-wide grin on your face!!

Welcome to the party Wayne. I just got back from a month long trip to Alaska & the Yukon. The Super Ten rocked it, including the Top of the World Hwy in less than perfect conditions.

I'm ocfjr on the fjr forum. Lots of current & former FJR owners here.

Already sucked into that. You should have seen where he suckered me into following him last year - him and the fella from Boston (both on Tenere's) - me on my FJR...

Couple years ago, I ended up passing a couple of hikers. They stepped aside and let me pass. They were on the Appalachian Trail... Yeah, I need a Tenere...

Yep, I realized I should probably look for something with more ground clearance when I was doing stream crossings and single track on the Feejer. :D

I'm hearing that more and more - I think starting out on the DRZ400 SM is going to help build confidence and the off-road skills to put me in a much better position once I make the jump to a Tenere.

And no, never had to pick up a FJR - ask Jim - every time I've dropped one, it went straight to the trash can afterwards...

Yes, actually my wife blogged about it daily during our trip. Google Cletha's Adventures and it should come right up.
