Need a skid plate if staying on tarmac?

Plenty of threads/insights about different skid plates available.

My question is whether it's needed/worth it to have a skid plate if the S10 doesn't leave the tarmac, or travel on unpaved roads that are merely dirt?

I do definitely plan on buying crash bars.

Thanks.

That's a loaded question. It all depends on what you end up doing with the bike.
I don't plan on adding either one myself. 95% tarmac.

Howdy,
Every m/c made should come with some type of crash bar. After all it is sitting on just two wheels. You should do fine with the stock plastic skid plate. That's what I left in place. I do dirt/gravel roads and have had no issues. If I'm on a non paved road and it gets to the point I wish I had a better skid plate I turn around, that 's not what I'm looking for at my age and the size of this bike.
Later,
Norm

Looks cool, plus a skid plate will keep that one small rock you kick up on the highway from punching a hole in the filter.

It's good and cheap insurance. That said, we have a number of owners who stay on street tires. The first owner of my bike didn't like the extra weight and it was nice to run the bike that way for a while.

But the bike has two Achilles Heels. One is the sump plate and the other is the radiator on the left side.

Bought my Tenere used and it came with skid plate and crash bars, nice to have but I probably would not buy the skid plate , the crash bars I probably would have bought those.

After living in L.A. and running the freeways, I have and will continue to run some type of sump protection. I have seen outboard motors, ladders, tool boxes and other crap on the freeway. The outboard was an eye opener.

Now living in Arkansas some old ideas hold true, just missed small ladder last month.

Sump protection I rate it right up with wearing protective riding gear, cheap if you need it, expensive if you need it and do not have it.

Good Luck

If I didn't take the bike off pavement I don't see any reason I would put on a a skid plate. I've had other, closer to the ground bikes that had less protection. There's a very small risk, but I think I'd be willing to take it.

when you look, the oil filter is right there, up front, low, all exposed...
Yamaha OEM is the bare minimum, anything less is full commando, if you know what I mean.....

I didn't have one on my last bike because I didn't plan on going off road, right up until the point where I was picking my self and my bike up out of the ditch. Realistically, I didn't need one then either, but it could have been worse. I totaled the bike but not the engine.
I have one ordered for the Tenere .

I'm yet to buy my first S10 but it's the first thing I'd fit, even on tarmac the sump and filter are exposed, I've often left a car park and dropped off a curb which is enough to hole a sump

How in the heck are you going to get poseur points for riding an ADVENTURE bike on road only, if you don't load it up with all the off road farkles?

That was my thought, that oil filter was just sitting there behind that front tire if anything flew up off the road; I don't expect to ride any single track just fire roads and the like.

Why on earth would you not? A bash plate will protect your sump and oil filter from all sorts of impacts and your engines paint finish from stone chips too. Besides, they look really good too and, if life was only ever about need, we'd still be living in caves and running after our food with pointed sticks.

How many other bikes have them? Do you have them on your car? Only necessary if you go off-road. I think it looks better without. ::017::
