Navigation bar diameter size increase?

I've got a '22 ST ES. Has anyone been able to increase the diameter of the navigation bar to allow for mounting phone/nav devices with clamps larger than 1/2"? The solution would need to be solidly located so it won't spin/move on the road (obviously...). A typical phone mount clamp doesn't work, and - if you have a tank bag like I do, and don't want yet another device squeezed on to the bar near the controls - handlebar mounting is not an option. Thanks!

You can get 1/2" bar clamps / adapters easily enough. I've got a GPS (Moto Pump mount) and a radar detector (Ram Mount) affixed to the 1/2" bar.

“Navigation Bar” even though lots of folks are using it to mount navigation equipment I don’t think Yamaha ever intended for that bar to be used for that.
My GPS is mounted to one of the handlebar bolt’s using a $10 RAM ball bought of eBay, been using it like that trouble free for over 100,000 miles.
At first I tried a handlebar clamp but it would always manage to get rotated out of position on rough roads so I gave up on that idea.

Agreed, my gps shakes there. But it’s mounted so I leave it up. Might come in handy one day. More than likely make its way into my parts bin for use somewhere else on a new bike in the distant future.

I have had great experience with the Motopumps GPS mount on a prior BMW GS, i Highly recommend it.

I am using the Quadlock Mirror Mount on my Super Tenere, and it works perfectly! I added the ladlesportadv Nav support bars and now my phone is rock solid and doesn't move while on or off road.
Well it’s a pretty slick mount but I have had plenty of trouble keeping the Tenere mirrors properly secured on rough roads without a GPS mounted to the stem so it’s hard to believe it would work very well.

I'm using a Motopumps Mount on my factory Nav-Bar for my Garmin, and it is super-solid.
Just be aware, it's not "1/2-inch". It's actually a Metric size, so if you are going to order one make sure you order the correct one.

I'm not sure how this works but looks interesting. Kind of a bar above the handlebars.

I'm not sure what specific type of mount you're using, but RAM makes a big selection of ball mounts to accommodate all sorts of applications, including one that will work with different diameter rails. Here's one:

Over the years, I've made a lot of my own mounts for various GPS units and phones. This is one I made for a Zumo XT that was constructed from a scrap piece of 5/32" aluminum plate and a couple of u-bolts from the hardware store, along with a 1/4-20 threaded ball mount from Amazon:

In order to make the mount grip the rail tighter, I made a bushing out of some scrap ABS plastic:

You could just as easily take a u-bolt and dip it in Plasti-Dip a few times to build up a thick coat on the non-threaded part and it would achieve the same result.

The trick is to increase the amount of friction between the rail and whatever clamps to it; the more friction you have, the less you have to really clamp down hard on the accessory rail. If you decide to use the split aluminum tubing idea, I recommend that you put a thin coat of something like E6000 adhesive on the inside surface of the aluminum tubing and let it dry before you install it on the rail. It'll increase the friction between the tubing and the rail, and prevent the tubing from slipping.

So...what worked - and really well -
Might be worth a try!
Got a 5-foot hose from Amazon for $12.50, cut it to fit across, split it down the middle and slid it on. So far, so good! Because it is so grippy inside, and the phone mounting clamp compresses it a bit further, I might not need hose clamps. And it actually looks pretty good. Hoping for a break in the weather this weekend to put some bumpy miles on it. Thanks!
