Well, actually, walks in *looking* for a bar. Well, a *set* of bars...

I'm currently snowbound and crashbarless. But thinking I should used the remains of this long winter to add some protection.

I've read most of the threads here about crashbars. Here's my question: from an install standpoint, for a reasonably handy dude (but I ain't a mechanic), what's a good choice if I'm installing but have never done frame/bar stuff before?

I just want a decent set of crashbars for the inevitable tip over. Not looking for exotic fan protection for spills on trails. 80% street, 20% dirt and gravel backroads.

BTW White 2013...and I don't love the look of black bars...

::026:: on the Altriders. I've not had anything else, but they do what they are supposed to and were super easy to install...

As to your install question, no worries. They are all easy bolt-ups with no magic.

I had SW Motech on my 12 and now have Altrider bars on my 14 ES. While the ALtrider bars seem to offer better protection, I could install/remove the SW-M's by myself, but needed help from an assistant to get the Altrider bars on.

I think I would continue to support the Altrider option here.. I'll agree with the others who said the install, while not requiring magic, is much easier as a two man job.. Or you have to get creative in supporting the weight while you get them started. I did manage to do it myself, but would not make a habit of it.
On the other hand, I am supper glad they are on there.. I have slipped out in mud on them once, and did a slow drop on gravel - like material when my kickstand decided to dig in faster than I corrected for a new spot... In both cases, the left bar took a fair amount of the string out of it. It did not deform in the least bit and fully protected the panel / radiator area. In the gravel, the coating did scratch a bit - but flat black rustoleum seemed to blend in well enough..
In other words - I think they do exactly the job I got them for... And since they are more "functional" than I intended I have been glad I did not wait long to get them on there.. ;D

BIG YES on the AltRider crash bars. They work. Saved my plastic once. A little sanding and rattle-can black and you can't tell they worked unless you look real close.

I used soft rope to tie them to the handle bars when I was installing them. Kept the weight mostly off my hands/arms when maneuvering them to match holes.

Consider replacing the main bolts with studs. This makes mounting the bars a lot easier, and makes it easier to add a bash pan later. It will also reduce the possibility of cross threading the bolts into the soft aluminum block - DAMHIKT (argggg). There are several threads in this forum which show how and where to get/make studs. Do use high strength steel for the studs if you go that route.

like the ALT bars very much so I'll be in that camp also. easy to install -but you will need three hands at one point in time to install. (just ask the neighbors wife) very well built-worth the extra rubles.
black bars dont (to me) seem to stand out on a white bike.
i over research things ALT bars was the result.
you can also hang things on em like-christmas lights-windchimes-extra bags or ???

Well, I wouldn't dare say anything but Altrider now. Mob rule. Lol

Truthfully, I bought cheaper back in summer of 2011. And 40,000 miles into it, I haven't managed to trash them.
But if I had, I would replace them with.............ALTRIDER.

I bought the Puig bars and they are very strong and easy access to covers etc. A lot cheaper than most but seem to be very good quality. Fit up was simple with no adjustments necessary.

+1 on the Puig bars! Of course, I have yet to lay her down... knock on wood.

Well I had the Givi crash bars on my 2012 and had. Tip over with no damage. They are only 2014ES and well I like them. Look great and work well. then again between the two bikes I've only ridden 92,700 or so miles.
Damn I really enjoy this bike. Yesterday I took the saddlebags off and rode it... it felt so light and small compared to how it felt on Monday with the saddlebags.

I might be out riding my Super Tenere'

I have Givi on mine. I like the looks and when I was knocked off by a myopic 85 year old turning right (he did not see me!!!!) the right bar 'sacrificed' itself for the sake of the bike. As a result very little damage.

I've put it down both sides on the gravel and the bars needed some touch up paint but didn't bend and no damage to bike. I have deliberately laid it down once while stopped on a hill to help a mate and was comfortable doing so. Probably best value for money accessory I have fitted.

I also have the Givis, but as far as I know, they are only available in black. They did the job with just some minor scrapes on Ophir pass during the Colorado rally.
