My new S10 gear box makes CLANKING & BANGING noise under2k RPM under a light load in the lower gears. My dealer said that this is NORMAL and that they all do it! This is not acceptable for a new bike. Am I unique or have others had this problem? Not a HAPPY start!

Welcome on, Cy from ... ??? I guess it would depend on your meaning of a "bucket of bolts". If you can post a more specific location, perhaps there are some Forum members near you and you can get a second ear on the situation.

When you get a chance, please post under Member Intros so we can all find you. Hope it's not a serious problem. ::004:: to the Forum. R. ::022::

Sounds like it could be the final drive lashing by your left foot area. If so, no big deal. Parking lot maneuvers cause that for me, and I'm sure a ton of others, too.

At any rate, our FD/shaft assembly is similar/same to the Vmax, it will not grenade on you. You can spend weeks trying to identify true weakpoints on this bike in terms of powertrain, and if you think you might've found one, the gearbox/FD assembly isn't one of them. ;)

Good luck, and a valid concern for a new bike.

Can you record it and post the clip on the forum (don't know if that is possible with a soundbite)? Maybe on youtube with a link.

The entire drive train in these Tenere's are noisy, if you listen to it, it will make you crazzzzzzzy. My motor rattle's and bangs sometimes it seems more so than other times. Best bet don't lug it, it will snatch and clank keep the motor spinning and ::021:: surely you can find another S10 to listen too but I think you dealer is telling the truth.

My S10 is maybe the loudest bike I've ever owned, in terms of metallic noises coming from the engine (not exhaust). My understanding is that it's due largely to the dry sump design. It sure sounds better when I'm wearing earplugs. But I don't think it's a problem, just a trade-off of the design.

I guess it is all a matter of perspective. Having recently traded in a Moto Guzzi Stelvio on my S10, I thought the Super Tenere's engine was very quiet. The normal 8V Guzzi motor has been described as sounding like a washing machine full of wrenches, and my S10 is almost silent by comparison.

Mine sounds like a diesel tractor, always has. Takes some getting use to coming of a very smooth V4.

My engine was very noisy then I fitted a TBR exhaust. Engine is quiet now.
Add an Arrow Header, Mechanical noise gone!

OP,
Don't sweat it, Stone dead reliable bike. I am nowhere near as far up the mileage curve as some, just coming up to first valve check. Oil, Filters, Tires and Farkles. That's it. Pretty hard to do much better. Cept maybe more farkles.

Umm, your not playing around with the bike on the center stand are you?
The only thing I've got for you is to not lug the engine, under 2k is lugging. Revs must be kept up or she'll lash and bang at you. The drive train must be kept under tension always, correct gear selection goes a long way towards keeping the lash from banging at you.

Hey, Shane!

How'ya' been? :)

No, it's not me... I love my Super Ten, and all the noises it makes are music to my ears, especially since the damn thing has been bulletproof and unbreakable in 34,000+ miles! ::012::

And the last time I was up at Fargo's I was disappointed. Maybe I got 'em on a bad day, but the "Q" wasn't nearly as good as the first time I was there.

Did you ever sell your S-10? You back on the Gold Wing or an FJR?

The S10 is a touch noisy in the engine department, but my 955 Sprint motor definitely gives it a run for the money in the noise department.

Both motors sound "agricultural" if you ask me.

Better get a moped. Riding like that on a 1200cc bike, sounds like this bike is a little too much for you. :D :D

Sounds like you are lugging the engine.
