Well thanks, but it's a process that takes time to learn and it's a process to get the bike to that sweet spot of barco-lounger on wheels. Good on you for knocking out the Saddle Sore & BB rides. As you said, managing the stopped time is what makes or breaks you on the extreme rides like a BBG. Most places, and for most sane riders, it's a 20+ hour ride unless you're in rare parts of TX with 85 mph roads or running down I-15 in UT with 80 mph speed limits for large stretches. I did one fairly fast that covered 7 states. But I had big stretches of I-80 across the salt flats and later WY that helped make up for the slower parts down I-25 and some traffic. Nevada is another place where you can fudge a bit... The hardest rally I did had me riding 11k in 10 days and DNFing at the end for time barred. Epic riding, but learned a lot about what I could, and could not do.Bigbore4 said:My hat is off to and I salute EricV any any other Tom Dick or Harriet that has strung the 1000 mile days back to back and completed a rally. I want to try someday, the sole reason I registered a ride, to have a qualifying ride. So that whenever I can get the nuts up, I can try.
As an example of managing stopped time. When I'm doing a gas stop, I don't take anything off, or get off the bike. Not even a glove. My CCs are in a sleeve pocket of my jacket that allow me to get to them with gloves on, (though it's tougher with the rain gloves). Even pumping 11 gallons of gas in two tanks, I'm usually gone before most riders are done filling their tank. If I have to do a bio break, (#1), it only requires removing one glove. (not enough johnson to do it with gloves on! )
I will often hit a drive thru McD's or Arbys and get 5 of the cheeseburgers or RB Jrs and tuck them in the tank bag to eat on the fly. They taste the same hours later as when fresh.
It can be surprising how much time you can gain by being efficient at stops. It's a real Bi*#h to try and make up time though.
Krussell - Great job and thanks for sharing it with us! Sorry to wander in your thread. ::26:: Very cool that your lady is having fun riding with you. Mine rides her own, but that has it's ups and downs. Sometimes I'm riding the mirror more than I'd like. She's capable, but I still worry.
