Being the lucky lad that I am myself & the Mrs are off to Florence for the week, which just so happens to coincide with the Moto GP at Mugello. We're flying not riding down and plan to get the train up to the track so I was wondering if anyone else has done that ? Any tips for hassle free travel ? Ta in advance ::008::

Hey Bry, the one and only time I went anywhere in Italy via train was from Rome airport to Rome central, went to ticket booth asked for three tickets to exactly where we wanted to go, even showed them the hotel and station nearby details, enthusiastic clerk then handed over three tickets in exchange for what seemed a ton of euros (what do I know, I hate pubic transport, not a typo!!) anyway, en route, the inspector came along to check tickets and wouldn't you know it, our tickets were wrong and so charged us another €100 fine. Later online found out this was a particular 'official' scam for tourists. Anyway, just thought I'd pass on that bit, fyi!

Good story Dogdaze - a nice stitch-up.

We flew into Rome Ciampino some years back. Picked up a free bus to the Train Station, then just a cheap time limited commuter ticket, that lasted just long enough to get us into Termini/Rome Central Station, then out to our Hotel near St.Peters. Cost peanuts & proved OK as they passed inspection.

Whilst we have never actually attended Mugello on race day, I thought I would chip in with a few basic thoughts. In my experience Italian trains run pretty well. However the ticket halls can get very crowded, with some enormous queues & I think this is where the problems can start. My advice would be to purchase the rail tickets in advance & nominate carefully the day of travel & time of the train - it is probably easier to do this at the ticket machines, which are multi-lingual & take cash/cards. You will find the locals like to press/push/shove - all part of the experience. The track up to Borgo threads it's way up the Sieve river valley, so hardly a quick run. Just get Google to do the calculations - obviously needs an early start. I'm not sure whether they put on any extra trains for the event , but the rail company, or maybe the circuit can provide details. Behaviour at the track is............. interesting, verging on bonkers. Noisy, very 46 yellow & enthusiastic. Some guys even take bike engines along on sleds to the campsites, only to rev them on the limiter until they blow..... why?

Anyway I have to confess, whilst we had intended to go & we did loads of research/planning, we got ourselves talked out of taking the bikes by some buddies who had attended the year previous. They suffered some petty thieving, which was annoying when that far from home, as well as problems getting out of the circuit after the race. Hence we considered using the train, like you, so looked at all the options. Eventually took the bikes on the Ferry to Spain & watched the races from the comfort of an armchair instead. Sad really. Hopefully someone on the forum from Italy can help with some first hand experience.

Anyway, enjoy & take care ........................... KEN

Well, that didn't go exactly how I planned...

I really didn't see myself leaving Mugello in an ambulance on the Saturday or needing a litre of saline via IV drip or needing a couple of hours recovery in hospital with heat stroke... And then to be told not to go to the race on Sunday as it was going to be hotter: not how I planned it at all. I ended up watching the race in an Irish bar in Florence (air conditioned) with the Mrs and a few Moto GP fans which was OK but not quite the real thing. Bugger.

On the flip side the day after I got home myself & Littledave headed to Ireland and had 5 days of amazing weather with NO RAIN ! The 'wild Atlantic way' is a must ride if you get the chance so all's well that ends well ::008::

Blimey dude not the way to do it, gutted for you! It's something the Mrs and I discussed doing once our 14yr old has finished his GCSE'S next year, she's not one for the heat anyway but I've often wondered how fans manage sitting on those grass banks all day. When the time comes we'd better try somewhere cooler!

Wow Bry, that sucketh biggeth (as it is W. Shakespeare year). Sorry you missed out . For all those looking to sit in the sun, a solar sun umbrella is a must along with a cooler of at least 5l water and ice.

Cheers, it was a bit of a bummer... I wouldn't care but we drank loads of water, used factor 50 sun screen and I had a big floppy hat (for my big floppy heed) for shade. The Mrs suspects it had a lot to do with some medication my (now ex) doctor had me on, but i'm not meant for the heat I guess - good job I live in Northumberland !

It would appear so, the wife informed me while I was in Ireland that we are going to Bermuda next year for a family wedding. That'll not be hot either...

Sounds like an excuse to sit in an air conditioned bar all day
