More noise with crashbars

I just installed the Altrider crash bar and skid plate a few days ago. Is it normal to have more resonating increased noise because of the tubular crash bar? I did tighten all the bolts at the recommended torque.

I used to have a KTM 690 enduro R. When I added a skidplate it magnified the sound from the engine a lot. what I did , I took it off then I used a Tar like material , its used inside car door to kill noise,,,,, I´m gonna do the same with my Sw Motech skidplate when I get it.

Has anyone tried using Dynamat or similar on the inside of the plate?

govrajphd, welcome to the forum. As mentioned above, it is not the bars, but the skid plate that is reflecting the engine sound.

Jeff, I put sound deadening material (I think it was GTmatt) on my SW Motech plate on my 2012 and it did help if I wasn't wearing ear plugs. Since I always wear ear plugs when I ride, I didn't bother doing that on my 14 with the same plate.

A friend rode up one day to show me his new pan, I could hear it coming down the road. Reflected sound or a high frequency 'ringing', dunno, it was strange.

I notice the motor noise is louder/different with the oem gravel guard in place. Doesn't disturb me with earplugs in. I may put some soundproofing on at the next oil change.

Hmmm, I'm going to try this on my OEM guard this weekend. I've got a ton of the GR Mat that I bought off of ebay (or was it Amazon) a while back. Perhaps it will damp the clatter at idle?

Contrary to popular belief, DynaMat isn't sound insulation or absorbing material. It's function is to change the resonant frequency of panels of sheet metal (like the trunk lid of your car for example) by virtue of it being dense and heavy. You see it misused all the time in car stero installations where folks completely cover huge areas with it in an effort to insulate for sound. It does work to an wxtent in this way, but there are far better (and cheaper) ways to accomplish this.

The short answer is that it isn't likely that this would help on a skid plate, unless the plate is resonating or 'ringing' and generating noise that way.

Thank you all for the reply. In addition to the skid plate I think the crash bars also contribute to the noise because when I flip the side stand, I could hear that resonating metallic noise. I will try to install the dampening material during the next oil change.

As a point of reference I installed the Touratech skid plate last week and it came with a 12" x 8" piece of rubber with self-adhesive that you place on the bottom tray. I've heard no increase in sound with that install. I'm sure you'll solve your issues with a little trial & error!

I had a large sheet of adhesive-backed, 3/4" neoprene laying around from building a TZ350 seat. It cut the noise down dramatically.

YES! And it does work( i.e. Great Stuff ). You will need to drill a small hole for the straw at the end of each tube, and make sure you get all of them. A length of hose that you will throw away after ensures that you will get it in all the places needed. It is very messy to do.
As far as the skid plate a can of sound deadening undercoating is all that's needed. $5 at your local auto parts dealer. Or just drive though some mud and sand seems to do the trick.
