Modifying Yamaha Skid plate

So I bought the bike almost a month ago, and since then I have been obsessing over what skid plate to buy. I talked to the local fab shop and they were more than willing to fab one up for me although I did not get a price. I wanted something with lots of air, this was verified after sundays ride with lots of climbing and the fan constantly kicking on. I liked the ventilation of the Yamaha skid plate and also on the altrider, but of course the protection of the altrider. Yesterday there was however a pregnancy test with my gurl (not my blue and black one, not to be confused with black and blue ::025::) and the Yami plate it is.
My question is who has modified their mounting points of the stock plate? Looks fairly straight forward and I was thinking of mounting similar to the Touratech.

You know that the skid plate has nothing to do with the engine cooling off... Its a liquid cooled motor. Unless a brand of skid plate blocks the radiator inlets you wont see a difference in temp between brand X VS Y...... The Altrider skid plate is one of the better production units for sure...

Yup, but it surely cannot hurt to keep the heat moving away from the Motor.

Shrekonwheels, I had considered doing what you are thinking of. Depending on how you ride MADSTAD makes a skid plate that is very reasonable, fits nice and mounts the rite way. Not any where need the quality that TABASCO sells at ride on, but better than stock. I can post pics if you want.

Thank you, I was looking at them, I dropped em an Email asking them about attaching points and they never responded (two weeks ago) So I went ahead with the stock plate, should be in today.

Well I got the stock plate in today. Looks like the Coverage is ok, seems like I paid 180 dollars just to have the oil filter covered though :p

Just need a strip going down the right side to cover the exhaust a bit more and I think it will beo k after modifying the front brackets.

Have you looked at the worldcrosser skid plate extension? I too want to mod the gyro skid plate. I would move the rear mount to the frame and off the oil sump. Not a fabricator though. ::003::

I have Yamaha engine guards and an ALT Rider plate. Had to mod the front and made it attach to the cross bar. Not mounted to the engine.

I did exactly the same with my SW Motech bass plate, I also insert medium dense rubber blocks between the plate and the engine to help to spread the shock should I have a big nock,

I also extend my OM crashbars at the top to protect the side covers and add a cross bar to suport the extension.

Yes on the high density foam blocks too. They do work well. I am always beating out rock dents as part of any oil change.
