I can't answer your question, but wanted to point out that the two OEM tires were fitted without regard to color. We got 5 in on the first pre order and even saw sequential VIN's have the two different tire brands on the same color. We had 3 blue and 2 black and only 1 had the Metzler tires.

My first S10 came with Metzler Tourance EXPs. Excellent tyres with plenty of grip in both wet and dry and good feedback, but they wore out by about 6k. I replaced them with 'ordinary' Metzler Tourances. Just as good grip in the wet/dry and feedback but last a lot longer. With my riding I would expect to get about 9k. I traded this bike for a new Worldcrosser which has Bridgestones on. Equally good tyres OMHO but cannot judge the wear rate yet.

Always ran Tourances on my GSes, so I guess these are my tyre of choice.

Hope this helps

Mike

I'm really happy with the EXP's performance/grip, but I wore the back out at 1900 miles... ::012:: ::012:: ::012::

I really like the EXP for on road use and very light / dry dirt use. They are not much fun in mud or deep gravel however. I'm removing them at 5kmiles mostly highway. Not totally worn out but they don't have alot left, and I want something that will work better in mud and deeper gravel. Giving K60s a try for the off road improvement.

EXP is advertised as a 95/5 tire and is pretty useless off pavement. I prefer a pure street tire if that is the thing I can use it for.

They were GREAT tires for Deals gap and the surrounding world-class roads. (you lucky dogs living nearby)

And I thoroughly enjoyed leaning the brand new pig over on them as we began our bonding process.

Since then, I returned to reality (boring tarmac by comparison) and developed the "other" relationship with my Tenere. Dirt!

So, obviously the EXP's became a thing of the past.

Mine came with Tourance EXP's as O.E. and i thought they were pretty good tyres. The rear tyre was totally knackered after 4,500 miles though, which for me, is not good enough really. Have just swapped them for a pair of ContiTrail attacks which will suit my 99% road riding and hopefully last longer than 4,500 miles too. ::001::

I have nearly 8K on my EXPs (and anticipate taking them off next week or so as the rear is nearly at the cords). I have a set of PR3 Trails ready to go on the bike in anticipation of a 5K mile trip I have planned. I did take the EXPs into the mud once and had absolutely no fun at all (well, fun, but mostly spent the rest of the day trying to remove the seat vinyl from my sphincter). They are fine in the dry on fire roads though.

My S10 came with the EXP, and I found them to be a great tyre on the road in both wet/dry conditions. Only problem was that they were both worn out by 6000km. Since I am about 95% road, I put on PR3 on the bike and am getting 9000km from a rear and 18000km from a front.

Wouldnt hesitate to go back to EXP but they simply dont last as long as some of the others.

Just about to change and am looking to go to PR3 since we have winter (our wet season) coming soon.

My experience is similar, I loved the exp's when riding hard in tight stuff, they are very confidence inspiring as a 95 / 5. They were OK on formed gravel roads but toast at 7000kms. Since then I have ran Anakee and Anakee 2's and about to put another set of Anakee 2's on. They probably lose a bit to the exp as a straight road tyre but wear better and are well suited to tight gravel and the odd forestry road.
It is Autumn here and with winter approaching, the Anakee 2 is the best performing wet road tyre I have used so it gets another run, next Spring I will consider another set of exp's.

After 800 miles, mine are just fine on the road. Nice grip on cornering and stopping.
I'll put something a bit more agressive on next time. I don't go off road as much as I want
but, when I do, I want some confidence under me. The EXP's aren't made for that at all.

I picked up a hunk of aluminum in the Rear Tourance EXP at 7500 miles I had expected getting another 1500-2000 miles on them. They were fine for pavement but not so great in gravel.

I bought MICHELIN PILOT ROAD 3 TRAIL and they seem like a nice street tire

After a while all tires seems the same except for Knobbies

EXP's were stock. Ran fine on highway and dry gravel. Rear was toast at 4k miles so I was NOT happy. I would have expected that from a Shinko E705, but not from a high priced Metzler.

Next tire was an Anakee 2 that lasted 10k miles with lots of highway time and some gravel. 2nd Anakee 2 made it to 6.5k miles on more local and aggressive roads.

I like them enough to buy a set of 200 mile take-off's for 100.00. Couldn't pass up the deal. But I do like the anakee 2's.

EXP's are good tyres, but they life is not great, I got 3800 out of my first rear, and the second one is not likely to dfo any better - but should see of what's left on the front.

On the GS I switched from Deathwings (hated them) to EXP's (Good) to Roadsmarts (much better) and for road use road tyres are always gonne be better, and if your idea of "off-road" is a graded gravel track then they are still OK - ridden a few "unpaved roads" two up on a ZZR1400 (ZX14R) with Roadsmarts.

The wear was not massively better (about 15% more than EXP's) but they offered more grip both wet and dry and cost about the same.

When they came out Dunlop TR91's were well recieved by the press, and raved about by anyone who tried them - but much like EXP's did not last too well - and were still outgunned by the Roadsmarts on track tests (wet and dry)

I think the bottom line is for Road use fit premium sport touring Tyres (PR3 / Roadsmart 2's) if you really wanna go off road properly you need to ignore the Tourances / Trail Atacks / TR91's as in reality they are road tyres with deeper tread and wider grooves, they last no longer than road tyres and offer a shade less grip - but are fine and dandy if you don't like the look of road tyres on your ADV bike...

... I am not taking the piss either, the Roadsmarts on my GS looked quite out of place, so for my 99% road use I am either going to fit Roadsmart 2's for performance, or give up that last 5% of performance and fit TR91's to because they look better - if they do give an advantage on the simple tracks I may take to it is nothing but an added bonus.

I think its already been said but EXPs are great tyres for the road, used mine in sub-zero hoar frost conditions and never saw a peep from the TC or hint of ABS trigger. They loose out on soft mud and rear tyre life isn't the best but not bad and probably as good as other giving the same road grip.

I must be the only one:

I detested them.

Made the bike turn in very sluggishly at low speeds.

I was very glad to get them off, at around 4500 when the rear was dead.

I have had EXP's on the S10 since i bought it. There is appx 5k mls on them and the rear is squaring off a little.

However, after a recent trp abroad ( ferry to Scotland ) we rode in a lot of rain and they NEVER let go, even with snow at the side of the road when it was +3 Cel,

I go for a sunday blast when at home adn have not had one issue with them an i use the bike for commuting in all weathers too.
