Does the standard R1 have the same hot-rod engine parts and 200Hp ? Same dash, electro-package ? I haven't had time to read every detail of each.
The M has a more robust electronics package that has some telemetry elements for set up and seems of use only to serious racers. I think what comes on the standard R1 is plenty for the club racer, track day guy and certainly for street riders. I believe hp, brakes and chassis are the same except for the Ohlins suspension package on the M.
I like the looks of it. I think the '04~'06 is the nicest looking R1 generation but the later ones are better bikes. I loved my '09, that cross plane crank sound is just superb and the motor is a bull. I destroyed it at the racetrack though (talent shortage, don't ask :'( ) and did not replace it. As much as I'd love to have one of the new ones, which I think are very nice looking, at my age, they move faster than I do. Incredible bike though. I think they did the right thing by offering the M.
I was kind of expecting an 800cc Tenere based on that FZ-07 engine, apparently not this year anyway.
