WOW, I didn't think there was a sportbike I wanted more than a Ducati Panigale until I saw the R1M. Its not necessarily the looks but the technology. Has me thinking of trading my Diavel in on one… I'd just buy the R1M, but I'm still paying on my 4 month old S10 which isn't going anywhere!

As a previously multiple r1 owner I'm not overly keen on the looks. I bought all my previous r1 because I believed they were the best looking bikes out there, not so sure about this latest incarnation.

Agreed, the looks don't do it for me. If I were choosing based on looks it'd be the Panigale for sure.. But technology-wise.... ::008::

I dig the carbon M1 front... That is 'GP' cool... and the rear tail is bad a$$.. The sides don't really do it for me.............. I think I could look past that with Magnesium wheels, Ohlins, and enough electronics to make me look like a squid on a track...... LOL And with 200Hp that should do it....

Does the standard R1 have the same hot-rod engine parts and 200Hp ? Same dash, electro-package ? I haven't had time to read every detail of each.

The M has a more robust electronics package that has some telemetry elements for set up and seems of use only to serious racers. I think what comes on the standard R1 is plenty for the club racer, track day guy and certainly for street riders. I believe hp, brakes and chassis are the same except for the Ohlins suspension package on the M.

I like the looks of it. I think the '04~'06 is the nicest looking R1 generation but the later ones are better bikes. I loved my '09, that cross plane crank sound is just superb and the motor is a bull. I destroyed it at the racetrack though (talent shortage, don't ask :'( ) and did not replace it. As much as I'd love to have one of the new ones, which I think are very nice looking, at my age, they move faster than I do. Incredible bike though. I think they did the right thing by offering the M.

I was kind of expecting an 800cc Tenere based on that FZ-07 engine, apparently not this year anyway.

I like it. The previous one was a bit controversial in the looks department as well in my part of the world. Things are moving forward again.

That is an incredible machine. Like they say "We race You win" In all honesty if I was to dust off the old leathers I'd buy the R3 and upgrade the suspension. At least I could ride the R3 close to the redline where it's the most fun. I would run out of talent long before to push the R1 on the street. Great bikes being produced now!

As much as I'm a Yamaha fan, and definitely NOT a Honda fan, I find myself drooling over the new RC213V-S, by far the best looking Honda sport bike since the RC30 from the late 80's.

I really can't imagine what good either these things are on the road (assuming you don't have a death wish and/or want to keep you license) but for a track day weapon it would be hellacious fun.

Predicted cost on the Honda? $100,00
Good track day weapon? I don't know, do you have a spare $100,000 if you crash it?

I didn't see any cost estimates on the Honda - it's still prototype so whoever said that, it's a stab in the dark. The Yamaha R1M - the highest spec of the two versions - will retail at US$21,990. I reckon the Honda, assuming it makes it to production, will be quite a bit more than this, but less than the most recent roadgoing MotoGP bike, the Desmosedici, which cost around $60k.

And no, I don't have any of those numbers in spare cash to throw down the road at a track day!

That's kinda always been my thought...... I just need a 5yr old super bike.. I probably wont be able to take full advantage during a practice track day. (I would only want one for track use) And if I toss it off into the weeds, and wad the whole bike is in a ball, its not that big of a deal.... If I did that with a new $20-60K machine I might be singing a different tune and not ringing its neck out down the back stretch.....

I don't, but there are those that do. And they are the people bikes like that are built for.
I will get back to work now building bodywork for the new R1 for the rest of us.

If you want to have fun at a track day (or small event racing), race small bikes with a whole bunch of big guys. Ya'll should be looking at honing and refining skills on bikes like the R3. I do it on a TTR125:

Most people aren't good enough to extract the abilities of a small bike, they certainly aren't going to do it with a 200hp rocket

For a track bike I'll take a used R6. For wicked cool even if it spends most of its time in the garage I want the new R1. I have been trying to keep myself from calling the dealer with a deposit. I may be crazy but I want one parked next to the S10.

If you want an R1 and have the cash buy it. Life is short. Even if you'll never ride it to it's potential just looking at it and knowing you own it may be enough. You don't want to be on your death bed saying "I wish I had owned an R1." If you have to take out a loan and deprive your family of anything buying an R1 would be wrong.
