May Have Found Cause of My Final Drive Leak

I had the familiar leak in the drive shaft seal on the final drive so I took it off and found oily water and dirt inside the swing arm. The drive shaft was clean but the coupling gear and bearing retainer had a coat of rust on them.

I took the final drive to a Yamaha shop to have the seals and o-rings replaced and the mechanic there said the water and dirt inside the swing probably caused the seal failure.

I removed the rubber plug from the swing arm and it looks like water and dirt have been getting around it. I cleaned up the plug and glued it in with some silicone adhesive. Hopefully that will prevent a repeat failure.

Rem,

Doing good, we had some of your cool weather down here this week but it won't last long. Can't wait to get back up to your area, maybe next summer!

For those not aware, the plug is on the inboard side of the RIGHT swing arm. Good idea to use a little RTV or other sealer, especially if you do stream crossings.

Were you able to get the seals replaced as you waited?

No. I contacted 4 local Yamaha dealers and none of them had the special tools in their shops. The dealer I left my final drive with has ordered the tools and should have the job done this week. The mechanic used an air impact to get the nut off but wants to wait and get the proper tool to use on the bearing retainer.
