Madstat Screen Size Input Needed

I called them today and didn't really get much help. I've had a Madstat bracket in the past and can't find specifics for the ST that the bracket will indeed raise up the stock screen by 3 inches (it says the range is 3 inches, but is that 1 1/2 inch lower than stock up to 1 1/2 inch higher than stock (3 inches total) or is it mounted even with the OEM and then it can go a full 3 inches taller than OEM. I have the 2015 model so it already can be adjusted a little but the OEM screen is about the size of a coke bottle compared to what I like.

In addition, I don't know if I'd like the 18" or the 20" screen and I guess it would depend a lot upon just how the 3" of travel the Madstat Bracket goes (see above). Madstat web site says the OEM screen is 17" (assuming that is pre 2014) and so I doubt the 18" would be much improvement for me, but I'd like to know when they make their measurement of the screen, is it from the same reference point while mounted on the motorcycle...if the OEM screen is 17" tall and I put on a 20" Madstat that sits 2 inches lower than the OEM screen, I've only gained 1 inch.

Thanks in advance.

I bought the OEM large shield from yamaha for my 2014 and love it. creates so much more of a wind break that I would not consider even going to an aftermarket windshield like I did on my 2012.

The Madstadt improves the adjustability of the windscreen so much, and works so much easier than oem, it is a really necessary farkle. As far as the adjustment, I can't comment right now, as the Madstadt is on my workbench waiting to be installed on my brand new 2015 that I hauled home today. ::025::
On the old 2014, with a Parabellum 24" screen, it is about a perfect fit for me at 6-2 and 32 inseam. Could adjust it too look just barely over top, or even higher to look thru. I would not even consider using the oem screen. Went for a short ride tonite and the windblast was too much for me.......

So, I just went to the garage, took the factory screen off, then held the Madstadt bracket approx in the right vertical position. I would say it will raise your screen approx 2.5" higher than the stock mechanism in full up.. This is not a perfect measurement, just an "eye ball", so don't hold me to it if that is off a little!!

I believe the wind screen heights are measured from top to tip. The mounting holes are always pretty much the same distance up from the bottom, not much point in extending a screen downward... so the + number will always be up from the mounting holes. The early bikes came with two sets of holes for height adjustment, so the numbers could be a bit vague, although at least CalSci only put one set of holes in their stuff, I drilled a second pair. I wanted the bracket higher up the screen for strength, but the screen is right at it's low point above the headlight fixture. So, measure your stock height, get a number, know you want X inches taller, do the math and order that height. I'm pretty sure the aftermarket mounts will, at their lowest, be a match for your factory low. They shouldn't start out two inches taller than stock. My Touratech can go lower than stock, but far higher than stock.

From what I've gathered, it sounds like the bracket alone will push the OEM screen up by 2", which is an improvement for me. I'm pretty certain that I would be happier with a 20" screen than an 18", especially when it gets a bit cooler outside. If I can't get it low enough, at least I can tilt it back further to allow air to flow over it rather than around it.

Thanks!

Re: Madstat Screen Size Input Neede

I don't have measurements for the OEM vs Madstad on the Gen 2 bikes but having used one for a while now I would say the height adjustability is at least as good as the OEM unit. The thing is, the comparison is a little limiting because with the Madstad installed you are more than likely going to be making use of the 3-4" worth of tilt available at the same time (continuously variable on both by the way, not 3-4 notches to choose from). The net effect of that is getting it so you can see over the screen is likely not an issue. I'm 6'"2 with a Parabellum tall (24"?) and seeing over it is easier with the Madstad than it was with the stock bracket for what it's worth, 'much easier to fine tune....

I've got the madstad and use the Parabellum 20" during the winter, and stock during the summer. Was talking to those guys and I believe they are going to make a replacement for stock since mine is all scratched up. HIGHLY recommend doing the Parabellum over other shields....

I recently had Madstad install their brackets and 20 inch tinted screen on my '15ES. For me the brackets is a very nice upgrade. The windshield is superior than the OEM for me as well. I am still fine tuning it to find the sweetest spot for my size, (~6ft 32in). It was very convenient to drive up, avoid any shipping & handling charges and even get a bit of a discount. They were very friendly and quite helpful. I really like the beefy crossbar for gadget mounting. I'd certainly recommend Madstad to a friend and in fact I did. He bought the same setup albeit with a clear windshield. If you are within driving distance give them a visit. They even install the items and let you do a test ride before purchase if you wish.

Why Parabellum over the Madstat?
I bought the Parabellum long before I bought the bracket. I went with the Parabellum as it seemed to have max-coverage for long distance touring which is what I was looking for. I seriously doubt the Madstad screen is anything but top notch but I don't really have experience with it. Like seats or bars, it's really not about what is "best", it's about what is "best for you". I will say whatever screen you use, that bracket is going to make it A LOT easier to get the most out of it.....

I will just add this; I have the Cal Sci XL screen (had it on the V strom too), works perfectly and eliminates a lot of wind noise and almost zero buffeting. I do have the Touratech mount too, and tbh I find it almost worthless with the tall screen. It may work better with the standard screen during the warmer months to allow the screen to tilt for greater air flow, but would have to wait until summer to try it. I found the same with the Madstad that I tried for the V Strom and went back to the Cal Sci. Just to add confusion...........

I don't mind a little bit of confusion when it comes to picking a windscreen; to be honest, I had a Parabellum on my other bike with the Madstat and the only issue I had was the bars hit the screen at full tilt, but obviously only happens when I'm steering at walk pace to get into the garage. I want to make sure (and this is the '15 model now) that the screen fits the bracket (Madstat).

hole spacing is standardized so any Gen. Two screen should fit with the Gen. Two Madstad bracket. Be careful when ordering both tho as the spacings for the Gen. One bikes are different and not all sites are clear on that. On the bars, if you do have a contact at full lock issue come up you can always try rotating the bars and/or brush guards a bit. I didn't need to but it should not be a big deal to do so if needed.

You won't have that issue on this bike.

I had the Madstad 20" and the OEM wings and together they provided very good wind/weather protection. During the summer I'd remove the 20' and install the OEM shield.
