Ok so I am looking at putting on of my several pelican cases on my S10. I guess I ma lucky 'cuz the wifey gets them from work so cost is zilch!!!!! I was going to just drill some holes and mount it on the back stock rack like I did my DR 650 and KLR 650 but I thought I would ask...............

WHat is the deal with the ALTRider 200 bucks after market rack? Why it is necessary? I see where Yammie tells you the load limit on the stock one but how can a after market have a higher capacity and what is it on the ALTRider?

Thanks

I mounted a 1550 to my Altrider rack about 1000 miles ago and it's been great. If I didn't have the rack I would have added a plate of some sort to help support the bottom of the case (I don't think it would be strong enough with just 4 closely mounted bolts).

I can get more pics if you like.

I have a Pelican 1440 case that I am going to have to drill some holes in order to mount. I guess i am wondering of I should remove the factory one and make my own or just mount it to the factory. Why did you get the ALTRider mount? Post some close up of the mounts please.

The main reason some go for the AltRider rack is that it's aluminum instead of the factory's plastic. Some like the cubby space under the AltRider rack as well. That is also has some built in mount holes for Givi and RotoPax is a perk for some too.

As long as you don't rely on the strength of the plastic rack itself, mounting the pelican case to or in place of the factory rack shouldn't be an issue. Some stand offs or spacers and bolting to the existing locations with a backing plate inside the case would probably be fine.

There’s some write up with install and comparison photos on the Altrider rack in the mods database. Click the link below.

http://www.yamahasupertenere.com/index.php?action=genericDB;sa=showEntry;entryId=40;cat=1

The plastic factory rack is not supported in the middle or rear; just two bolts to the plastic base on the front side of the rack. The aluminum Altrider rack is supported in both the front and rear and eliminates the plastic base (called the Stay Box in the parts diagram) such that the rack is bolted directly to the tail section which is fairly sturdy.

At Twisted Throttle we designed an a la carte Pelican system you can buy quick release racks designed to bolt to any flat case. Here is the hardware for the case:

The system was designed around the Pelican style case and can mount to any rack that accepts Givi Monokey adapter hardware. Naturally, we sell just such a rack:

If you put the quick release hardware on you pelican case it will also fit side racks that are properly configured with the Pelican adapter hardware as well.

thanks for all the info.

I looked at some Twisted Throttle stuff a while back, to be honest there was so much stuff there I could not decide what was best for me. I guess I will mount the top case for now and down the road add some side bags.

Patrick, big hit to the wallet but well worth it. The AltRider rack is an excellent piece of equipment and will allow you to carry much more than just a topbox.

Gee.. I never thought I would apologize for having too many options - but I get it. The best suggestion I offer to anyone who is a little confused or needs to answer a few questions quickly is to call us.

Everyone here is a rider. We all have major "farkleitis" here but no one is looking for the cure. We play with all of the stuff we sell and use the hell out of it. If you have questions we know how to answer them because we use it all daily. If any of you are in the area stop in and see us. 855-255-5550

I also have a top box, but am waiting to mount it. I just saw the new (prototype) Micatech top plate, and it is simply awesome. Quarter Turn fasteners for quick top box removal, extra mounting points (at the grab handles) for a super solid feel, and a removable section so it fits flush in either high or low position (to match either with or without rear seat).

But I hate spending money, so I may just bolt it to the plastic until I break it, then replace the rack with a metal alternative.

Kevin, I just looked at the web site and I was not able to locate prices for me. If I need to I can call you tomorow........

I have several cases laying around, it is up to me to find 2 that look OK and will work. So If I have my own cases my question for you is how much is for the luggage racks and the hardware to mount 2 cases side only? And I guess I forgot do they come with keyed locks or not. I guess a prices for it all BUT the cases.

Also what is the total for a set of crash bar foot pegs and mounts, saw some cool black ones: MFW.050.00.03.00-8

Thanks man, you gots lots of stuff.....

I went and bought longer bolts and mounted it to the stock plate. It all bolts to the same frame so other than the factory plastic being cheap I dont see where the 11 lbs load limit comes into play. Besides it has had more than 11 lbs for over 3 months now........stoopid factory.
