Luggage choice : Bummot, Metal Mule, Touratec, Holan

Hello,

I want to buy a complete set of luggage for my new XTZ1200 and go on a road trip and I'm mainly hesitating between the Touratech Zega Evo, the Metal Mule and the complete Bumot set.
Holan is a little less known but seems to be interesting too.

I'm leaning more towards the Bumot set with top case + two pieces of luggage.
The advantage is that, for €1,500, you get the whole set with the fixing kit and also the toolbox, which is really practical. It's the only brand to offer one that fits behind the right-hand case.
Touratech are also an interesting option, without the toolbox and a little more expensive than Bumot.

Metal mule doesn't offer a toolbox, but seems extremely solid, with interesting options for road trips.

I'd like to hear your opinion.

I have Bumot and think they are outstanding. I have the toolbox in which I can fit a mini compressor and tire plug kit, and a set of torx wrenches. It's handy, although the rear opening is right in front of the taillight stalk so it take a bit of maneuvering to get stuff in and out.

I use Metal Mule top box and pannier racks with Mosko Moto soft pannier bags. The Metal mule kit is indeed incredibly robust and well made. I can’t remember the actual spec but I know the racks are made of tubing that has thicker side walls than usual

I like the idea to have a toolbox, I plan to put compressor, tire wire kit and some tools.

The Bumot full system look great on your picture, it's the Frozen Grey color right ?
I wanted to go black but from the photos I get the impression that grey is less messy and it's look nice, I like it !
You choose 45L or 40L panniers ?

I have grey Bumots and silver Touratechs. I filled them both with water. The touratechs leaked down about 2 gallons n 24 hours. The Bumots didn’t leak any. The Touratechs show fingerprints, handprints scratches bad. The bare aluminum is hard to keep shiny.

I have Holan three-piece set in black. Liked them due to the narrow installed width. No complaints, great set of panniers.

Absolutely true @Tenman, the Bumots are 100% waterproof!
Believe me,I come fromthe Netherlands..
It is a great little country, but it definately needs a roof over it…

The Bumots also work for a Campsite ice-box to keep your drinks cold, or as a wash-basin to do your moto-laundry while on a tour.

Bare in mind alot of people tend to take alot more gear than they need. Also get some inner bags if you get hard boxes so you can leave the boxes on the bike when you unload. If i am on my own i only use soft bags on the side. I have 1 cheap set i leave on the bike because they get dirty and use another as inner bags. Attached to a rack for hard panniers. I have a metal top box i never remove as it makes it so much easier to move the bike around. My metal boxes are Ardcases but he doesnt make them anymore. Good luck.

With all that feedback, I'am 100% sure that I will go with the Bumot top case and paniers.
I'm still hesitating between the Medium and the largest paniers, because the medium (40+36L) is the same width than handlebar, the largest version of Bumot is a little bit larger.

I've never done a grop roadtrip but I'm planning to do one this summer (1 week), and 2 weeks in Scotland next year.
It's hard to imagine what a trip of this duration would suppose, especially since I'm traveling as a duo.
I'm afraid I'll regret taking the medium version just for the story of width. But at the same time it makes the bike "easier to ride", I don't have to worry about the width behind, I can rely on the width of my handlebars.

You dont have to get large panniers. Keep it slim and if you need more space put waterproof bags on top of the panniers. If your travelling solo you really dont need that much space. Even 2 up it will probably be enough. Its camping gear that really adds volume.

I got the "Medium" sized Bumot Cases.
I did not want them to stick out as far as the Handlebar. They tuck in close to the bike.
I ended up getting the Pannier-Toppers from Bumot also. They have some internal zipper pockets, and come with an extra removable "Dry-Bag" inside to keep things waterproof.
I usually stick things in those that I want quick-access to, like tripod and GoPro mounting gear for filming, as well as my extra water-bladders. They attach to the top of the Pannier-loops with built-in straps at the 4 corners.

I saw a YouTube video where Metal Mule boxes were tested with various types of firearms to see if they were in fact bullet proof. From memory I think they managed to withstand .22 and were then submerged in water and remained watertight. Not sure what the purpose of the test was but if I ever get caught up in a firefight, I doubt I’ll be ducking for cover behind my top case…

If you lane-filter go with the narrower set. You'll use them more often after your trip is over. That'll also make you pack more carefully for the trip. People tend to take too much stuff.

Why would the top box get in the way of side opening boxes?
It’s possible that top opening panniers may not open properly with some large top boxes, particularly if the panniers are hinged rather than the lift off type, but I can’t see how side opening ones would be affected - unless I’m missing something!

It does not get in the way at all.
Even with the extra Pannier-Toppers on them. They open just fine.
