Was going to order altrider skid plate and lower crash bars. Any thoughts? There are a few different brands out there and I'm new to all this.

How much protection do you need / want ? We still make a super bomb proof skid plate that is the only one with a warranty ! Altrider crash bars are very good, Iv used them for almost ten years on the same set. Ive had friends that have fallen about 500 times with there acrider crash bars and they are scratched all up but still work as intended. There are many skid plates on the market, and for "general use" a few are pretty good. Others are nothing but jewelry for an ADV bike.

Just depends on what your needs might be !

I would like the best. I like the look of the altrider crash bars. The altrider skid plate is welded and seems built well. If I got those two I would have some good starter protection right?

Altrider lower and upper crash bars, ACD skid plate here.

ACD plate is bomb-proof but has to be removed for oil change (to access filter). If you go with ACD you'll want to do the "stud mod". One other consideration with ACD plate if you plan to go Arrow headers in the future: there is an interference issue that will require modification (cutting) of the skid plate resulting in exposed pipes (which kind of defeats the purpose of the skid plate if you ask me).

Be honest about how much protection you're going to need. I mean, she's a 600lb girl. The average person is not going to be rock hopping, and will never need to invest the money, or carry the weight of a bomb-proof skid plate/crash bar combo. If you do, more power to you. If you find something you like the look of, ask around here and see what people think about the piece, 'cuz it's very likely that somebody here is using it.

I'm using the Altrider plate because like you said, it fairly well built. But, I also know that I'm not going hardcore off roading; curb hopping, and gravel being my extent. It does require removal for filter change; not a big deal. I'm using Mastech crash bars. Compact, sturdy, and allows battery access. Here's some pictures of the Mastechs.

In my opinion over kill in dirt roads the stocks are perfect. Its mostly marketing bs about adv life. When adv bikes will spend 95% on road. I think Yamaha thought about this and added the plastic guards.
