I am looking for a long mileage road tire since I do mostly paved roads...at my age! Someone suggested Metzner 880's?

Any insight(s) would be greatly appreciated.

Metzeler 880 Marathon is mostly a cruiser tyre, I don't think they make one for a 19" front. Good low noise tyre, but only 16",17" and maybe 18"....

PR3's are pretty good. I know a lot of FJR guys who run them and like them because they are dual compound. Harder in the middle and softer on the edges.

Just finishing 4th set of PR4's. Consistently getting 7.5 to 8k mi. from rears and twice that on PR4 Trail fronts. It's a great performing tire for S10s ridden mainly on paved roads -just wish it got better mileage on the rears.

Not sure if there is a size for the S10, but I have Dunlop Elite 2 rear tire with 35000 km on my Venture and I probably can go another 5000. Good handling and long life.

I've heard of ME880s delaminating. I think you are supposed to have higher than normal pressures with them.

+1 on the PR3's.

Had them on several of my other bikes, and great grip, fantastic in the rain, and pretty good milage.

I'll second this

I do about 30-40k miles a year and PR4's for me do 8k+ easy on the rear from Nurburgring to the harsh roads of Scotland that I do.

Don't use PR3's if you want long life tyres as they are designed for sport touring bikes (I had them on two FJR's and were fantastic) and not trail/adventure style bikes as not designed for the torque. I shredded the sets i tried on the S10 before the 6k services each time so only rate P4's for mine. However that is only my opinion and I'd put p4's for mileage before any other tyre for road use ::008:: If memory serves me right the P4's were designed specifically for trail/adventure bikes and says it all that GS's are sold new with them now........ tyres are better than the bike in this case ::025::

For record though done the rounds on most tyres and on my 3rd S10's so my choice is by trial ::008::

Michelin PR3's and current 4's come in standard, GT and trail compounds. The trail versions have a different central band compound designed for heavy loaded pillioned adventure bikes to give longer tyre life. They are definetly road tyres only and if you do go off road on them they puncture easily if you are unlucky! I know as my partner went through two rears recently and they seem to get small stones stuck in the grooves even on paved roads that have a lot of loose stuff on them!

I am looking at either Continental TKC70 as a 80/20 on/off road or the new Bridgestone A40 90/10 on/off or the Avon Trail Rider 90/10 on/off next time round after the stock OEM Bridgestone Battlewings which I find rather good for road and limited off road gravel tracks.

the 880's are high mileage touring tires. Hard as rocks, and are questionable in rain.

The do make them in the 19" size (110/90-19)
and 17" only in 160/70-17 so not exactly the same as the tenere.

I've tried metzeler nexts and loved them. 8 thou km on the rear. Got about the same on the stock metzeler that came with the bike originally

I got 15k out of my k60's.

I installed my first set of K60s at ~8000 miles. The rear squared off (lots of commuting) by 16K, so I replaced it with another (right before the Colorado Rally, as I recall). I'm sitting at nearly 24K now, and the front tire still looks fantastic, but the rear is squaring off again. I'm looking at the Mitas E-07s next...

I have commute to work 45 min one way on my Super Tenere. I have a set of Pirelli Angel GT tires. I have 11,000 miles on both front and rear and I have probably another 1k before the rear isn't safe on wet roads.

I see these threads all the time and there is never one correct answer IMHO.
I usually ride over 30K/year so I go thru a lot of tires. My Tenere is a little over 1.5 years old and it's over 47K miles. I have used the PR3 & 4's (great tires) and I currently like the Continental "Attacks." I get around 8-10K out of both brands, they both perform nicely and I feel good in the rain on both.
That said, I have buddies that have the exact same tire and ride similar miles and get different results. It will depend on several factors, how you ride, your weight, road surfaces and mainly straight or twistie roads.
Just my 2-cents. -JEP-

Jim,
You are right! I've used the same tires and never gotten that many miles. That's just the way it is! I choose to ride a bit harder than you. And you live in flatter Florida I live in Western North Carolina...

Not a problem just the way it is!
