Lightest weight/ smallest hard side cases

Plan on getting a Super T come spring. I am already thinking of side cases. On my current bike I use the Wolfman Expedition Waterproof soft bags.
They are light and waterproof but a pain to mount and get things in and out quick. I would like to purchase the smallest, lightest weight side cases available. I have ridden with soft bags for years and not concerned about volume.

Other than some odd combo of racks and small Pelicans (or similar), I don't think you can go much smaller/lighter than the Yamaha OEM bags. As long as you're OK with them being top-loaders (my preference) and are reasonably careful with their flimsy locks (I've had no issues in 25K miles but I don't gorilla them either), then the Yamaha bags are very slick and by far the ones that fit the bike best and have the most unobtrusive racks. But the capacity is sub-par.

Thanks for the input guys, that's what I thought and I will probably go for the OEM.
What about Engine Guard? Is OEM the most slick, light weight solution?
I plan on using the bike mostly as a sport touring bike with the option for gravel roads or easy hard packed trails. At this point I don't see the reason for a skid plate.

happy trails has some small hard bags up to very large capacity bags.....( panniers actually ) check em out...

Now, engine guards aren't a part you want to go light weight on.

The aftermarket engine guards (tipover bars) from Yamaha are probably the heaviest out there and one of the more expensive. People have mixed results with SW-Motech (some bent on first tipover), and while pricey, everybody with Altrider has been positive.

As for skid plates, buy almost anything EXCEPT Yamaha's. The sump is a weak point and the Yam plate mounts to it, so there have been some holed sumps after light impacts. At least the sump cover is not expensive.

Thanks for the info . Based on Input and price I think I will go with the OEM hard side cases and the Givi engine Guards. I am still not sure of the skid plate. I am not sure i need one for pavement, gravel roads and maybe a hard packed trail, but you never know. I have a DRZ that's fully protected for hard core d/s rides and even that's heavy for single track woods riding.

There are quite a few good sump guards to choose from. I went with the Givi Trekker Fender, shown in these pics. I was concerned with possible damage to the oil filter. Like you, I have been mainly on pavement, gravel roads and a few hard packed trails, but that filter and sump just seemed vulnerable to me.

I'm not sure why anyone would think the OEM offering is the "smallest and lightest" pannier offering for the Super Tenere. As said, givi E21s are significantly smaller and lighter, but a Caribou system with Hepco Becker racks and Pelican cases is no doubt lighter than the Givi, and could be smaller, depending on case size. Example

Most of the pannier offerings out there offer smaller than OEM cases. The other than steel offerings likely rival the weight of the plastic with aluminum panel OEM cases as well. If you really want smaller/lighter, spend some time looking around before you just jump on OEM offerings.

I have it on good information, (Mr. Jesse himself) that he will be showing a new set of 8" bags at our Tenere Meet at the Hub.
Considerably narrowing the profile of the bike.
Can't say enough nice things about him and his products.

What I did for Side cases >> Old Doskocil camera gun cases and Happy trails frame.
Comes in two sizes Large and Extra Large, see bottom photos top case is Large.
I have dropped the right side twice crashed it into the ground once it never popped open or cracked, they are light and weather tight.
The top case was mounted on my OEM rear plastic rack at first before I made an Aluminum rack. the OEM rack snapped off went flying down a hill off the side of the road, case was a little scratched up but again never popped open or broke.

The smaller capacity Touratech's may be an option if you don't go with the OEM. They do not stick out past the stock handlebar width.
