And I'm ecstatic!!!!

Reminds me of the two best days owning a boat. The day you buy it, and the day you sell it. ;)

Bought a new BMW F800GS almost a year ago (last March). It had been my "dream" bike, the bike I drooled over when I thought of dual sport bikes. I had several DR Suzuki's before this, and was hesitant to pull the trigger on the pricey BMW. After saving up for a year, I was able to put some money down and get the payments in my comfort range.

It didn't take long for the warranty to start getting used. First month it was in for a few days for a cracked fuel tank. Then the middle of summer, it was in for almost a month for a drivetrain issue. The shop didn't seem to think it was unusual for a bike to be out of commission this long during the prime riding season. In the end of summer, I was left stranded out in the Sierras without warning and out of cell phone coverage. The bike had 2400 miles on it, and would crank over, but not fire up. All electronics worked, just no start. Took the bike in, and was told nothing was wrong with it. I started carrying a digital camera to record the event, cause I had a bad feeling it would occur again. It did several times over the next few months, and I recorded the issue. The BMW shop could care less about the recordings, and kept telling me they could not find any issues with the bike. They got pissed when I had the bike towed in (on their dime) because it started for them. After the third time, the shop agreed to start replacing parts. Unfortunately they had no idea which parts to replace. By now, it was mid November. They told me it was bad California winter blend fuel. When I mentioned the issue started in the summer, they did not say anything to that. I watched as two techs hooked the bike up to the BMW service computer and ran a diagnostic program. They both told me the computer stated my bike was perfect, this as the bike sat and wouldn't start, only crank over. It was like watching two monkeys try and mount a football. After watching frick and fract having no clue about my F800GS, I decided it was time to Lawyer up.

I don't like lawyers much, but sometimes they are worth it. It took almost 4 months after contacting them to get a satisfactory response for all my troubles. I don't have any of my funds returned yet, but the bike is now gone and I can stop making payments and insurance on a bike that either sat in my garage or the repair shop more often than not. In the 10 months I rode it, it was in for warranty repairs 6 times over 58 days (4 times for the same issue), and left me stranded 4 times. Warranty repairs included new fuel tank, new chain/sprockets, new fuel pump, fuel system flush, many computer reflashes, and new fuel injectors. None fixed the issue which was an interment start-up failure.

Yeah, this is a weak rank but I needed to vent a little.

BTW: The issue occurred over many tanks of fuel, which were purchased from Chevron and Union 76. I also run the same fuel through my Yamaha WR250R which has no issues what so ever.

Sorry to hear about the trouble, even in the end if you get your money back its still never worth the hassle. It's also a shame that these manufacturers don't acknowledge problems more readily. It would probably help them much more in the long run.

The F800's seem to have a lot of demons. I thought they had them all worked out, but I guess not so.

I hope you get your money back soon so that you might apply it to a new S10!

Wow, what a nightmare. Glad to hear the you don't have to deal with it anymore. Will a Super Tenere be your new choice?

As rants go, this is a mild one. Sounds like you were pretty patient and I'm glad you're able to move on.

I've had pretty good luck with BMWs and the my current one (a S1000RR) has been perfect, but when you get a lemon, it can be very bitter indeed. The same happens with the Japanese bikes now and then, but, I think, much less often.

Yeah, I'm thinking as a Super Tenere as a replacement. I started looking at them in December 2010 after the sixth month of issues with the BMW. I have a WR250R that has been flawless running the same fuel as the F800GS, so the big ST seemed a good bet. Now I have a chance to save up a few months what I paying on the BMW to use as a down payment on a Super Tenere.

Sounds about like the experience I had way back in 1969 with a new Triumph Daytona. In my 6 months of ownership, the dealer had the bike for over a month, including a breakdown less that 5 miles from his shop the day I bought the bike. I traded the bike for a new Yamaha DT175 and never looked back! ;D

I thought about buying an 800gs when they first came out, but I wanted a smaller cc engine that was capable of comfort touring. I didn't think the 800 was it. I have read several issues similar to yours and frankly surprised and disappointed that BMW would put out a bike with so many problems.

Just sold my BMW cruiser. I was very happy with it, but I was ready for something different. Still have my vstrom to fill the gap until the tenere shows.

Sounds like your first issue is resolved and hopefully you'll get your money soon. Good luck.

HELL on earth. Good luck getting all the refunds. I don't mind to leave my bike or car for servicing with a problem at the dealer as long as the issues are solved or at least get an explanation other that the one given by the computer.
