Cyclist, motorcyclists, and even other vehicle drivers that are involved in a fatal vehicle accident never get justice. Even if the defendant is DUI, negligent, etc.. It Usually results in only a suspended license and/or minor jail time.

The family of the victim can typically only get justice in the form of civil court.

I still can't comprehend how this isn't gross negligence. She admitted to everything and showed explicitly how negligent she was.

Bikers are just second class citizens it seems. :/

220 days custody for committing murder  nonsense, with her track record she should have got a whole lot more than that....bloody ridiculous

It makes my blood boil when I witness drivers using their mobile phone whilst driving, there should be very, very stiff penalties in place for this crime ~ nothing is so urgent that it can't wait until a driver is able to pull over and make/take a call ::009::

With so much technology available within autos, the manufacturers should find a way of blocking incoming / outgoing texts from phones, period. Once the car has stopped and ignition switched off then texts should be allowed to filter to the device. We obviously cannot rely on people to be responsible and pay attention, 'cos looking at farcebook or some such other crap is way too important. If someone needs to get hold of you then a voice call is the way to make contact, everything else is secondary. Let's face it, no-one sends a text to tell someone else that their wife/ kid/ grandmother/ cat has died, right? Shame on the system that sends this message to drivers that don't respect other's lives.

Both AMA and ABATE are recognized as the pair of motorcycle lobbying forces on Capitol Hill. ABATE is seen as a vocal group to not piss off in the areas of helmets and noise. Which is unfortunate, since they do a lot more, including introduction of laws about going after drivers who kill bikers. I think that's how Jimmy introduced the thought here. Harley shops tend to post "Join ABATE" signs and as we know, Harley is about 80% of the US market, so ABATE is a great group to join!

The AMA is viewed as representing a wider base (more member and more types of riding), it's the organization the MSF RiderCoaches promote (resulting in 107,000 sign-ups last year per the AMA Annual Report), represents the US in international lobbying (remember that our bikes are designed to world markets, not just for the US), and is closer to the 24 members of the Congressional Motorcycle Caucus since most of them are members. They've clearly been around longer and gotten more legislation through, and have a broader range of issues, including our ability to ride on HOVs, ethanol fuel issues, helmets, noise, killed biker laws, etc.

Joining both or either organization is good for all of us.

My daughters' best friend died in a one car accident. My daughter believes she was texting. She said she was always texting and driving. I'm just glad it didn't involve anyone else.
I'm going to look into joining the AMA.

Checksworks has my intent correct. The point is,is to get involved.Join any motorcycle rights org. you like.Or at least call your local reps. and express your viewpoint r.ow. etc.We can, and do make a difference.Fred I get your loud pipe statement, but here in Wisconsin its on the back burner.H.d. corporate is in this state as you know and many of our senators ride h.d.. a.b.a.t.e. of Wisconsin currently has a enhanced penaltiy r.ow. bill drafted by rep. Brandtjen all the statues a.b.a.t.e. was looking for are still in it.Trying to get it passed this year. This was and still is a hard fought battle.Every piece of leglislation that a.b.a.t.e. of wisconsin has supported in the last 10 years has passed our legislature with unanimous support. These people are very good at what they do.Lobby day we pack the capital with thousands of motorcyclists and meet with reps.. and they are highly aware we are registered voters.jim
