Well I think last Sunday was my last ride of the year, and probably for a while. I'm due to have Bi-lateral total hip replacement next week, so I'll miss the riding.
But the good news is that the weather will not be great anyway so a good time as any to have it done. At least when it's done I'm hoping I can ride without pain for long durations and more importantly play with my kids, as they become more active I'm going the other way.
At least I'll have the S10 forum to keep up with stuff.......

Good luck had the left replaced about 7 years ago and well worth it. You will be back in the saddle before you know it

Best of luck with the hip replacement ::008::

My Mrs had a new knee fitted earlier in the year and it has completely transformed her life, although it has meant she can go shopping with ease... keep us posted how you get on.

Snap - well 50% anyway. I'm having one done January which hopefully won't interfere with the bulk of my 2015 riding. I'm having a little trouble getting clear answers about riding, specifically mounting/dismounting which is quite a swivel on tall bikes. Most surgeons regard motorcycling as a pact with the devil so tend to advise against even when you are 100% fit. They also tend to be careful about covering their insured asses when asked for advice. I realise that there will be 6-12 weeks of being careful and recovering full use but anyone care to comment on any restrictions they have encountered after full recovery from hip replacement.

Viewdvb, I've been looking for the same answers, although the surgeons second did ask the question for me and informed me that I would be able to ride (otherwise, tbh, I'd rather not bother) but after rehab and physio. Essentially they will put new hips in, and you'll be fine, just don't use them ::010::
The trainee surgeon also told me that one of their patients is the Swiss national free climbers and was back doing it within two weeks of surgery, he was shaking his head at this though.
Also, I think the type of procedure used would make a difference, I'm having anterior minimally invasive so they don't actually cut through any muscle tissue, rather spread it apart. The surgeon likened the pain to a really heavy workout.
I am extremely fortunate to be having it done at the official Swiss Olympic Orthopedic hospital, if it was back in the UK I would have serious considerations, added to the fact they would not consider me as a candidate because of age............
I'll post a post op report if you are interested.
I wonder if I get to keep the ball they saw off............hhhhmm!

I had both hips replaced, one in '07, the other in '09.

Best thing I ever did. Unbelievable the pain I was enduring.

Had them both done around Thanksgiving. I had amazing recoveries. Surgery on Tuesday, walked out under my own power Thursday, driving on Monday. BAM!

Well that sounds encouraging
Now, how long after did you ride, throw leg over as such?
We have snow in this part of the country until at least March. I never missed a day of available riding with either of my replacements.

Do what your physical therapist tells you. Do what your doctor tells you. Stay moving. It will go just fine.

Another miracle of modern medicine! ::008::

Heal well, heal rapidly, and heal completely. Spring is just around the corner then you'll be playing on the ST in the high mountain passes of CH....... you lucky devil!

Well, I had them done Wed morning, went under at 08.00, and back in recovery by 11.00. Felt groggy most of the day, and was encouraged to self administer morphine as and when although I felt pressure and discomfort rather than pain. Yesterday they had me sit out of bed and try to stand, wow, they really stretched the muscles and tendons, felt weak as baby. Today I got to walk about 20 meters, then again when they left had my wife help me to the bathroom (tmi?). I will walk a bit more later today, then tomorrow we walk the corridors I'm told.
I'd like to thank all the well wishers, and I guess it'll be about 3-4 weeks before I'm crutch less.

Here's wishing you a speedy recovery ::008::

My wife has been transformed since she had her new knee, I'm sure it'll be a revelation for you. A nice Swiss hospital too, no worries about MRSA, secondary infections, tools left behind etc. Not like the NHS lottery in the UK ! (The Mrs went private, gota love Bupa). And you're not missing any riding season either - win/win !

Best wishes in your recovery! Like 2112 said, at least you are down during the off-season. By springtime, I am sure you will be raring to go!

Cheers,

Bruce
