I have progressed from merino wool to cashmere for undergarments. Nothing beats cashmere for heat retention and breathability. The fibers are hollow unlike other wool fibers. It is expensive but so worth it after the first year or two. And there are different grades of cashmere, the good stuff is expensive. I have two sweaters that are both cashmere, one heavier and more expensive but the cheaper and lighter one is warmer just because of the quality of fibers. It's warm like plugging into an outlet. Thin wool balaclava under the helmet works well also, and keeps the neck warm.
