Got a 2012 with less than 3k miles, can't wait to add another 50k or so. And it was another beautiful day in SoCal

Hey welcome welcome to the group. She looks good-!!
There are more than a few of us it seems now in the So Cal area.
I still have not yet seen one out riding around, soon though I expect.
For sure you have it right about this weather around here - well said Havok

Welcome on, Havok. Hey, we're having great weather here, too. It's almost up to freezing, and it's not supposed to snow today. Now, that's hard to beat. Congrats on the new bike. Have fun, be safe. ::004:: R. ::022::

Hey Havok- I have actually been considering going the other direction. What year was your MTS? What are your impressions so far?

Rob, i think it really depends on the amount of driving you do. Its an expensive bike to maintain and own. If you are a casual rider, with 3k miles average, and can afford the dealers rates go for it. Its has great power, great brakes, it has zero or near zero off road capabilities. You dump it once on dirt road and you will wonder why it cost $450 for a single piece of abs plastic.

It is fun to ride, very stable and highly maneuverable. But I put on 15k miles on mine in one year, and two sets of rear brakes, forks rebuild, two sets of rubber, $375 valve adjustment. New sprockets and chain and the list goes on and on. And had a tach assembly failure!

Had a BMW K75S before that and I also put on 17k miles in one year, and other than basic maintenance, had zero failure.

So I am hoping to go back to a trouble free high mileage bike with the ST, and go off road without being afraid to scratch it.

Cheers

I have about 11k on my Super Ten in about 10 months. Also putting miles on other bikes at the same time.

At times I am a bit put off by the agricultural nature of the parallel twin and fueling, but the rest of the bike is great.

I do all my own maintenance, but would not be willing to do desmo valves! Had a Monster about 11 years ago.

What do you think of the Tenere so far?

Its a great platform, smooth, good clutch, brakes performance reflects its size and weight. Nice power, great options such as ABS and traction control for its price, shaft drive. I've looked at getting another BMW, a GS1200 but could not come to term with the $21k sticker price. Did check out the triumph tiger and my friend as the 990 KTM. But frankly I am done with chain driven and checking valves gaps every 15k miles.

I sold my Tiger 1050 - great bike, excellent performance, but it was costly to maintain, and it also had limited off road capability.

The Tenere, though not as quick, has been great for me. Maybe as I get a few more grey hairs, or a few less as my wife would say, I just don't have the desire to go fast like I used to. But the Tenere will zip up there quick enough. From what I can tell the S10 is an extremely reliable bike, I also like that there is a ample dealer network. Something that was missing with my Triumphs. Plus the valves and such were supposed to be checked every 12k miles on my Triumph, almost always a $1,000USD each time. I didn't like that at all.

The engine does sound agricultural, but it's nice and quiet compared to my '01 Triumph Sprint ST. That is a nice solid agricultural sounding motor.

What is on your farkle list?

I have added LED lights, a Stebel Nautalus horn in two parts, aftermarket seat, MadStad bracket and MRA Vario touring shield and GPS.

Possible items on my list are aftermarket can or full exhaust and fueling mods of some sort, or maybe nothing...

11,000 trouble free and relatively cheap miles so far.

Havok, to my brain there's a relatively short list of Must Haves and an endless list of Wanna Haves. First up needs to be some crash bars and a decent bash plate. Could not tell what flavor skid plate is on yours, but would recommend the one made by our own Jaxon (aka Tabasco). Look in the vendor section. It's pricey, but is the best out there. Altrider makes a decent one as well, but you'll have to drop it to change the oil. Not so with Jaxon's. I also highly recommend getting an aftermarket horn (Stebel and Banshee are 2 popular choices). Don't know if you ride in traffic much, but my Stebel Nautilus has saved my bacon a few times in heavy DFW traffic. After that, go nuts with GPS, aux lights, top box, power commander, exhaust, etc, etc, etc....have fun turning a wrench.
