When I start my bike my abs light stays on steady until I start riding. I don't remember my Black one doing it.

No. Not normal at all.

Somehow, it needs the ABS "reset" by your riding it each time. This is what happens when you intentionally put it on the centerstand and run it in gear to defeat the ABS: the ABS has no idea what's going on, as the rear wheel is turning but the front is not. It is confused, so it shuts off and blinks at you. By then turning the ignition off and then restarting, then riding, the ABS then gets info on what each wheel is doing, and the light goes out after it resets.

For a guess, one or both wheel sensors is having some issue. Did you recently remove a wheel, or did something hit the wire connections to the wheel? It could be that simple: the small cable going to the hubs front and rear are the pickups to the ABS wheel sensors.

If under warranty, I'd take it to the dealer and let them sort it out.

As long as it turns off at a speed of 6mph or higher it's normal. Page 4-5 of the 2013 owners manual...

In normal operation, the ABS warning light comes on when the key is turned to "ON" and goes off after traveling at a speed of 10 Km/h (6mi/h) or higher.

I'm with Yamaguy55, not normal for it to stay lit and not go out until the bike starts moving. Although it's interesting what the manual says about going off after reaching 6mph. Mike goes out as soon as the engine starts.

Mine goes out with the rest of them after POST. (power on self test) As soon as the tach needle takes its swing and returns to zero, all of the lights on the dash go out except for neutral; the engine doesn't even have to start. I just did it several times, the same each time. Mine's a two digit SN 2012, so maybe there was some change for the 2013s. But I still don't see it as normal.

Thanks jimbob, On my 2012 Super ten ,it went out after it started. I guess the 13 is a little different. Unfortunately I didn't get a manual with this one, the dealer has to order it for me. ::003::
Thanks everyone for the quick replies.

I'm with JIMBO on this. I also wondered, is this normal. So I looked in the manual. Mine doesn't go off until I start moving.

Well, that's annoying. Glad I have a '12.

I'm wondering if the change came about because people were cheating the system on the stand, then riding with the ABS off? This way, it forces a check every time you power on, it doesn't relay on the last good check. It would probably save them from a lawsuit.

Not that anyone would sue anyone else.

As my bike is put away for the winter, as is the manual, I can't remember for sure. But I do know that on my Honda ST1300, the ABS light would remain on until you had achieved a speed of about 6-8 mph. It then kicked in and the light went off. I expect that is the same with the Tenere. That would be my $0.0187 CND. R ::024::

My '12 clears after a couple seconds running - don't have to be moving. Seems odd. Go out to some safe loose gravel going about 25 and let UBS or the rear wheel attempt to lock up and see if all is in fact OK...

There's another ABS system I could name that the light doesn't go out till rolling. Could be the '10-'12's are wrong and the '13's got it right... ::025::

The same applies to my early model 2012 ST, but my late 2012 model Ninja 1K ABS light stays on until I am moving. Perhaps it is a newer trend?

My 2003 ST1300ABS stayed on until I started rolling. Can't recall for sure, but probably my 1993 ST1100 ABS did also. When I got my 2012 S10, I thought it was unusual that it went our before rolling, but that is the way it is, so no problem. Evidently the 13's have changed.

I was curious if I was right about my answer so I looked through my manuals when I got home last night. The Service Manual, which is a 2012, says the light should go off after a few seconds. My Owners Manual, which is a 2013, says after 6 mph. So that must have been one of the changes for 2013.

Nice catch. My 2012 OWNERS MANUAL also says it will shut off after a couple seconds. Looks to definitely be a 2013 thing.

Do the Tenere's have a separate ABS ECU?

EDIT: looks like they do - probably a programming change in there?

Light stays on until you start moving to show you that all is normal. Normal.
