I just changed from Android to IPhone. I used to run Google Maps on the "Drive" mode where I was at the bottom and my track was up. Did not have to have a destination it showed where I was going on hard or soft roads.

Cannot find the same on IPhone as it always wants a destination. I want the map since who knows what turns I will make. I want to see what is coming so I can choose.

Anything out there.

You can still use Google Maps on the iPhone. Just have it locate you, then start riding, the location icon will track you. Easy Peasy.

OsmAnd makes an iPhone compatible GPS app. I use it on my Android phone. It has advantages over Google maps; it allows you to input preprogrammed routes in .gpx format, and you can also use it to plan a route when you don't have a data connection. It has a less than ideal user interface if you're trying to plan a multiple waypoint route, but I get around this by planning the route in Tyre to Travel and then loading the route onto my phone. There's also a program called Furkot that you can use for route planning and then import the route into your phone.

I use OsmAnd as a backup GPS, as I still prefer my standalone Garmin.

WAZE has mapping and up to date POLICE updates! The object in the road feature is awesome too!
+1 on Google maps.

WAZE is awesome. Run it all the time on the slab. Also gives a farther look than gps. But, it does not like to recalculate. It will continue to force you to it's preferred track.

Thanks for this recommendation. I downloaded the OsmAnd app, $2.99 for access to North America, can be used driving, walking, cycling, contour lines and Wikipedia are free plug-ins, very useful additions. I downloaded maps for my state plus all surrounding states for now. I still prefer my Garmin also, but down the road I may make the complete switch to phone based navigation.

To the OP: There is also PocketEarth, and Galileo Offline Maps, available on the AppStore. WAZE is really good, it uses crowd-sourced routing to take you around traffic jams, etc. but not sure if you can download maps for use offline (out of cell range). Google maps you can download maps for use offline, but I never had much success with doing that.

I used to have a Garmin Montana and went to OsMand+. Never going back! I also download the offline maps for use when out of the US, which can be a life-saver.
