I am curious, and forgive me if this is already dicussed on the forum, I wish to find out the frequency of major part failure on the S10, for instance, water pump, fuel pump, etc. I want to keep my S10 for a few more years; I think will be good to look out for what might fail and stock parts.

You'll be hard pressed to find any "major" parts failures. S10 seems to be a well built bike with typical Yamaha reliability.

My exact feeling. I have actually not come across someone who has a had a major part failure. Speaks volumes for the S10.

If you dig deep enough, there are some failures out there. Most seem owner induced and not really a design flaw or inherent weakness with the platform. I'm looking forward to many thousands of miles (km's) without major issues.

Yea short thread, but if you had to name one, it probably be the headlight, and even that is very few, and would not leave you stranded.

These dam bikes have tons of empty gas tanks, oil changes ,and worn out tires. A ton more than most bikes based upon my reviewing other websites :))

I have been amazed that As I read this forum every day I found things like FD seal (not a big deal) Headlight harness (Not good) and one guy with a throttle body issue, #1 was the FD seal and nothing more.
To me this bike that sounds like it's always going to grenade first three gears is amazingly dependable far above and beyond any bike around. ::008::

Unlike many of the bikes I've owned in the past, My S10 spare parts shelf is nearly empty. The only thing I've "stocked" is a full set of the final drive seals and a couple ceramic headlight bulb connectors...

Ramseybella did a good job summarizing. There was one individual who had their clutch plates break apart. But considering how hard some of these folks ride these bikes, and the minimal amount of major failures, it appears to be a very solid bike. I just did the 26k service on mine, all in spec, no issues.

If you go to the SuperTenere thread on ADV, you will see it's mostly joking around. There isn't much to talk about when it comes to bike failures.

People normally complain when something goes wrong, and are more vocal when stuff breaks, than when it works great.

there will always be failures of some sort across a forum like this. Yes the ones that do have something break, will let it be know, but that said, this bike takes a crap load of abuse, and does great.

in my 35km the following happened:

-fork seal gone at 12km (before I installed fork protectors)
-Steering head top nut was loose (undid it with my hands, should be torqued to 90 ft-lb, guessing a dealer prep oversight)
-fuel pump o-ring recall
-burnt headlight harness (found it while installing my hid kit), easy fix though
-35xxx km the final drive seal let go on me, I did drive it for about 1200 km before it got really, bad, and then fixed. Not easy if you don't have the right tool but doable just the same.

I stock a set of final drive seals (shaft side, not wheel side) otherwise, some oil filters are on the shelf, ::013::
If you maintain this bike, it will go for ever. The above to me are considered minor, based on the crap I put this bike through.

most of the above are on my blog: http://thetenerist.wordpress.com/2013/10/01/tenere-headlight-issue-clarification/

This impacts me and my family as we live out here and have to deal with this current lack of rationality by both parties.

Bike Bandit is a good source. Tabasco has hooked up a good deal with Stadium Yamaha. You can get good deals through there too. Every so often they run a special with additional discounts. Another forum member and I pooled our money and purchased 100k worth of consumables (brake pads, oil filters, air filters, sparkplugs, etc...).
Count in cheapcycleparts.com to that list.
There was no final drive seals anywhere in Canada, and a 4 week wait from the dealer (japan order)
these guys found me two full sets, and kindly mailed them to me by us postal.
great service,

+1 on cheapcycleparts.com. I find they are constantly about 10% lower on OEM parts than the other on line providers and all these guys get their parts from Yamaha when you order. Good service also.
