I know there are a lot of variables in determining insurance rates, but does anybody have an idea of what rates might be here in the USA?

I should have thought to write down the VIN on the S10 on display at M-gville Cycle, then run it by my insurance carrier.

Not a deal-breaker to be sure; I'm just curious if there's a ball park figure.

Good topic, this has crossed my mind as well. I'll have to see if Progressive is quoting for this bike yet. They're the cheapest as far as I know.

I think we will have to have a VIN before we can get a quote from our respective insurance companies. I wonder if the display units are USA units or are Euro units. That might be interesting to get a VIN from one of these display units making the rounds and see if the insurance companies can find a rate.

That being said, as was mentioned, there are a lot of variables. Last year my rates on 3 bikes went down over 40% with better coverage (added emergency road service) simply by switching companies.

My experience has been that you can quote without a VIN, but usually it's higher than what you'll really get. I've quoted a handful of vehicles before purchase, and the final rate after giving the VIN has always been lower. So my rule of thumb is that if I'm happy with the non-VIN quote then I'll only be happier after purchase.

I just tried to quote the S10 online through Progressive and it's not showing up in their list yet.

The S10 probably won't show up on the insurance conpany's radar until spring. I'm going to the DC motorcycle show in a couple of weeks, so I'll snag the VIN off the display bike if it's there, then run it through my carrier (Foremost) and post up their figure.

Unless somone beats me to it, of course.....

I was thinking of this topic as well. Great idea for someone to get a VIN at an upcoming show. If so, please pass this on so we can try our respective insurance companies. I spoke to my AAA agent and they gave me an idea. I have high coverage and multiple bikes and the price was right between my Strom and my KTM 950. I will be happy if it is that price once I can get a firm quote with the VIN.

I'm anxious to see what the SuperT is as well. I'm guessing it will be right at or a little higher than my FJR (a little under $300/year) for full coverage (State Farm).

Yes, I think that would be easy with a bike that the insurance company knows, for instance to get a quote on a FJR1300 without having a VIN, because they have insured FJR1300's. Since they haven't insured a XT1200Z and don't know what that is, it would be difficult to get a quote. If they have no history on a bike, they can use the VIN to find out what it is. We'll see, I guess.

I just rated the S10 adding it to my Auto Policy $ 173.00 for the year
That sounds like a fantastic rate! Full coverage?

Sure sounds like good coverage for the price. Anxious to see what State Farm quotes me here in Colorado.

Thanks!

Hmmm, maybe I better check with State Farm, too. My bikes have been super cheap since I've been in Montana, so I can't complain about price. But the way they right up the policies, they treat each one as an individual policy with no multi-bike policy like some have (with the train of thought that you can only ride one at a time). Granted, they don't know WHICH of the ones you are riding at a time (could be the one with the highest insurance rate), but with my vehicles, they have always given higher and higher discounts the more cars I have on the policy. As a matter of fact MANY years ago, I had a thunderbird with full coverage. I found out that adding an old beat up pickup truck to my policy gave me enough of a discount that the car AND truck cost me less per year than only the car. Funny how all that insurance stuff works.

I've lived in states where they gave you a motorcycle policy option where you are not covered, or allowed to ride, for several winter months. I never did it because there were always those few nice days where you got out and enjoyed it where all my buddies were kicking themselves because they couldn't ride.

My 07 Dl1000 VSTrom was just over $500 a year full coverage. They had it classified as a sport bike from the VIN and model. I would still like to ring an actuary's neck sometime for not having a clue what these bikes represent.

On another note, if you get the VIN # off of the display bike, it isn't even going to have a USA VIN stamped on it. That alone should throww off the insurance company.

Hi Jeff.

I'm not sure the VIN will show if it is a USA bike. I know that there is a letter for country of manufacture (J for Japan, oddly enough :) ) but if there is an indication as to which country it is intended for, I don't know what it is. Anyone?

As of Jan. 7, 2011 SAFECO Insurance didn't have a listing for the XT1200z Tenere for making rate quotes. :-\ :(
Also someone had asked about some Tech Questions; I phoned Yamaha U.S.A. last week and was told they do not have a "Tech Manual" for the U.S.A. 2012 XT1200 Tenere.
