If this isn't in the correct place, maybe a MOD could help me out and move it. I am looking for information from anyone who has ridden the Colorado Backcountry Discovery Route. I am wanting to run this route in August as a birthday vacation. I am hoping that running it then the weather shouldn't be that much of an issue and all of the passes will be open. I have been told fuel isn't that big of an issue as the farthest between fuel stops is about 125 miles. I will probably carry some additional fuel JIC. I currently have both a tent and hammock setup that I use while on the Tenere, which would be best or easiest? Not sure if I would do much overnight camping above treeline but that would certainly make hanging a hammock a little difficult. Most likely will be running a set of K60s, I have a RUMBUX 3 piece set protection and Caribou Cases so I am not worried about damage from drops. Anything else I should consider?

I am able to give myself 16 days total from Dallas to run the COBDR and back...2 or 3 days to make the trip out to the four corners and then 6 days for the BDR and then 2 or 3 days for a return trip, stopping to see family in Denver and a few extra days in case I want to sight see or run into some issues.

Is there anything you would do different if you do it again? Any piece of equipment you wish you had but didn't take or something you did take that you didn't need? Thanks for any insight and help. And yes, there will be pictures and video from the adventure once it happens.

Colorado in August is as tempting as it gets for me. August can be brutal on the Gulf Coast. A little altitude for the attitude is brilliant.

By the way, there's several folks on here that rode some of that trek on their Teneres. I'm sure they'll chime in soon.

I ran the COBDR last summer on my WR250R (before I saw the light and got my Super T ;) ). It was a great ride and should be a lot of fun on your Super T. I wouldn't bother with the weight of the extra fuel. You really won't need it. There are also convenient towns along the way if you want to hotel it. I split about 1/2 camping and half hotel (and one night at home as I live in Steamboat). I would go with tent rather than hammock, but either would work as there are usually good trees and you don't have to camp above treeline. I actually wouldn't recommend it as you stand a good chance of getting altitude sickness. You'll want some decent tires, but it isn't that technical, so your K60s should be fine. You hit some sand east of Buena Vista that could be the most challenging. It had rained the night before I went through that section so the sand was firm, but if you hit a dry spell it will definitely be looser.

It is a spectacular ride with some unbelievable scenery.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

Man this sounds great! (We really need to meet up and ride since I'm only down the street from you in Addison.)

Hope everything works out for you.

Are you using GPX files for your navigation or following written directions?

Duk, thanks for the info. My only concern with extra fuel is what if I come across a fuel stop that is closed. Nice things with the hammock, size and weight is much less than the tent I have. I've thought about throwing on a set of TKC80's or Big Blocks. Just worried about the ride from DFW out to Colorado. Maybe find a shop near the start of the route to change tires for me.

Tallgears, anytime you want to ride let me know. I'm always exploring gravel roads out this way. Yeah, hit a bit of a financial snag today but hopefully I'm planning far enough ahead to get over that. I am planning on taking the Butler map as well as using a GPS.
