A fellow rider stopped to talk today, and when he saw my Super Tenere, he commented that it's a good bike for someone who doesn't quite have the income of a BMW rider, but still likes the GS style of bike. His comment made me wonder if there's any reality to what he said at all?

I understand that the average income of a BMW rider is about $95,000/year. Wonder how that relates to Super Tenere owners...

Perhaps you should have told him where to shove his theory?
I've had BM's from 1100GS to 1200GSA's and a few K1200S and GT's, but I want something that is more cost effective when it comes to reliability. Yes I have a S10 in the garage, and a DL Vstrom, and a VZ1600 and a BMW 550d M Sport touring, all paid for, so kind of blows his theory, no?

Income is great if you have more coming in than going out..
That's how I am at this time, reason i try to make my own stuff.
Most of the Beamer guys are scientist where I work so yes I guess they can have the status bike..
Do I care? No! ;)

Long gone are the 80's and Lamborghini owners I think?.. ::003::

I think the BMW bike, a lot of the time, is like the latest expensive car, suit, shirt, phone, laptop, it's about image. I gave up on that corporate bullshit a long time ago when I started up on my own. It does mean I am kind of invisible when I walk into expensive hotels and restaurants, but that suits me just fine, and I am a long way over average income.

If it had to do strictly with income I would still be riding my LT2 Yamaha around. ::025::

With all do respect..... who gives a flying fuck about our income. I happen to own both, a Super Tenere, and a BMW, and a Vespa, Phuck the image thing. I ride what makes me smile and will never understand why riders care about the brand others ride, or their income, their politics, their religion, their nationality, their color, the color of their eyes or their hairs, etc.... Childish really. ::021::

And I thought it was only in South Africa, here we have alot of those image (GS) riders.

End of the day I dont give a sh@t because if I wanted to ride a GS I would have one, and for that matter a 1190 aswell, Curently I'm on my second S10 and for a good reason.

Those people realy give me a big laugh, If someone had ask me that question, I would have told to go f@ck himself because anyone that ask that type of question must be new to the motorcycle thing specialy the dualsport market or a real asshol by nature.

There is a grain of truth to his statement, but not quite in the way he believes. A certain demographic simply has more disposable income, and less need to make an educated, discerning purchase. The cost of the bike and potential loss doesn't concern them. They just get what they want, and if that works, great, if not, no biggie. I don't have a problem with that. The guy you talked to has his opinion, it happens to differ from mine.

I know some BMW guys that when asked about potential failures or issues with their bike, simply respond "why do I care? I sell or trade in every bike before the warranty runs out." It's a different reality from folks that expect to exceed the warranty mileage cap on the BMW before the warranty period expires.

Without divulging my income (but I did vote), regardless of my income, and the ability to afford whatever bike that I want, I like to buy the product that makes sense. Spending $20,000+ "because I can" doesn't mean that spending $12,500 on the bike that I really want is a bad idea, just because it costs less.

Since we're talking about the GS above, I like that bike a lot. But I believe mechanically, the S10 is more reliable, more robust, and less expensive/easier to maintain. I also believe that the S10 does for me exactly what the GS would do for me. In other words, I don't not do rides, or go on certain roads, because I don't have a GS. For me, the decision was simple ... a more desirable bike for less money, leaving more money in my pocket for other things.

In my snow-country neighborhood there are two kinds of people. Subaru people and Audi people. Each feels superior to the other. Same deal.

Lol, good analogy. Personally I like suburu's and never owned an Audi.

I have had similar condescending comments from GS owners.

A more important question: Is there really anyone on the forum who bought a Super Tenere but really wanted a GS and couldn't afford it?
I can't see that being the case.

I like the GS, but prize reliability more. To me that means: well designed and built. I have ridden quite a bit on both. The Tenere is a better dirt bike and I love backcountry riding. I also have had some of my key motorcycle experiences on Yamahas and am biased towards that brand. Price had NOTHING to do with my purchase. ::022::

Always thought that people who needed to surround themselves status symbols had small, fragile egos, and maybe other anatomical parts.

I am fortunate enough to be able to buy pretty much whatever bike I want and I own an S10. I tried a GS but it was poo, I also didn't wan't people to think I was a knob before they met me (afterwards is fine...). It's all marketing image - ride the best, forget the rest ::008::
