Hello,
Lurked, liked, and am now a member. I have a KTM SMt 990 that will be on the block soon and I am pretty sure I want a Super Tenere. I have noticed quite a few nicely equipped used bikes on this forum for sale and was wondering if the import process for a used bike is different than a new bike. I imported my camper from Michigan, saved 3 grand, and was impressed with the simplicity of the whole process.

Hope you found some help elsewhere? No answers in 2 months?

Information is available at http://www.riv.ca/

Basically, I believe you need a letter from the US side stating there are no outstanding recalls, along with vehicle import form, bill of sale etc.. The border crossing needs your paperwork in advance, don't just show up with the bike and expect to bring it across. Then in Canada, it needs a Federal inspection. Canadian Tire is authorized to do it. Then depending on your province you may need a Provincial Safety Certificate, pay your taxes and get your licence plate.

I bought mine in Ohio and had it registered in Ontario the same day. The RIV process is easy and painless.

U.S. border needs 72 hours notice. Get their phone number and call them. They are usually very helpful. Need a Recall letter or a Service Letter from a Yamaha Dealership stating all recalls done. Go to RIV Canada Website for all the info you need. Paperwork can be done on line. GST is paid at the Canadian Border along with $195. for the vehicle inspection at Crappy Tire. RIV sticker comes in the mail usually within 48 hours. 15 minutes at the American Border and another 15 minutes at the Canadian Border. Inspection at Crappy Tire and Registration at your local Registry and you are off to the races. Quebec is usually a little backward in the process and may not even allow it.

Thanks for the replies everybody. I had given up on my original question as well. I am hoping you are wrong Red Cat, my experience with importing a travel trailer to Quebec was very painless. However, motorized vehicles seem more complicated. I went to the RIV site and a US Tenere seems allowable. Getting late in the season, a good time to buy, but a lousy time to sell my KTM. Thanks for the welcome rem, I will head over and introduce myself! Always remember there are alot of us bilingual Quebecers still left, we love our province (not our actual government ) but above all we are very proud to be Canadian! They will have to pry my passport from my cold dead hands ::009::

You are correct. I was going to buy my new FZ07 from my usual Montana dealer, but because of the close MSRP, horrible exchange rate, travel time, RIV fees, and now the added PITA of having to use a broker... it was a no brainer to buy local
