I'm riding up from South Florida to the Blue Ridge Parkway between Oct 31 - Nov 2 and this will be my first time up there.

The plan is to do the Dragon once and then explore the many other routes that are available up there. Who's got some good routes? ;)

CHEROLA HWY
FOOTHILLS PKWY
WAYAH RD (CR1310) TOWARD FRANKLIN
HWY 28 - FONTANA DAM
LITTLE RIVER GORGE ROAD - HWY 73 TO GATLINBURG (can connect to it off Foothills Parkway)
CADES COVE

This a few in the general area of the Dragon. There are so many good roads it's hard to decide which ones to go on. Be prepared for curves.

Ride up Mt Mitchell if it's open then.

Ride down NC 80 to NC 70 go east to the edge of Marion and catch US 221 north to NC 226A aka Diamond Back. At the top eat at Little Switzerland Cafe if it's still open. Stay at the www.BigLynnLodge.com (however it looks like the close on October 31st for the season) So you can stay at https://switzerlandinn.com/

Ride on over to Grand Father Mtn and go up if it's open then. Take 221 off parkway to Blowing Rock, NC.

Don't forget after you ride up to Front Royal... MM 1 and you get home apply for http://brpfoundation.org/content/end-ender-program.

There is so much more but enjoy! However you are not giving yourself much time to ride the 469 miles of the BRP.

If you go to Wayah Road, do FS711. It's paved. part is like a race track and the rest is falling back to nature. the part that's like a race track was recently repaved, but used to be in bad shape with car swallowing cracks.

Do the Diamondback Loop in Little Switzerland. http://www.motorcycleroads.com/75/1022/North-Carolina/Diamond-Back-Loop-%28226--226A%29.html

If the slow pace of the BRP gets to you, jump on 221 that parallels the BRP for a good bit and has a 55mph speed limit.

Don't get a ticket on the BRP... the cost can be astronomical.

do the Dragon on a weekday where the idiots are in less numbers.

Awesome stuff y'all!

Brick: Thanks for the lodging info. I'm giving myself 48 hours to get as much road action as possible.

Bryce: My riding days will be a Sunday and Monday. Sunday to maybe get a picture from Killboy, or one of the others, so I can waste my money and Monday to avoid all the idiots. My wife was not pleased with me showing her bunches of TOTD crash videos :D

Yes, now we are in leaf season the weekend traffic on BRP and Skyline can be absolute murder.
The lighting for photos at the beginning and end of the days can be magic for photos.

Hello,
I've always found that the best roads off of the Blue Ridge are those going east to west. The Blue Ridge runs basically north to south so any road crossing is coming straight up and straight down, of course with a lot of of curves thrown in. ::015::

I live maybe 2 miles from the BRP in Asheville.

Indeed. The BRP is a 45mph speed limit and slower in some place. A speeding ticket is a federal offense and can be, as described, astronomically high

Double ditto on both these points. Oh... and dress warmly!!!! I rode to work at 0600 yesterday with temps that were at freezing or below and that was at low elevations. It will be MUCH colder up at the average BRP elevations.

Want to show me around some? ;) I was planning on camping up there but nope, not with the sub freezing nights y'all have been having. I've been buying plenty of thermal stuff this week so I should be covered there.

How much off roading you thinking about? If near the Cherohala, check out N. River Rd/FS 81. Easy, fast, fun stuff. The Tenere eats it up.

If you are up by Lil' Switzerland then ride Old 105. Not as fast, little harder but just as fun.

Whatever you do, stay away from Cades Cove on a Sunday, peak leaf season. Trust me.

So... did Killboy capture you while riding the Dragon? Inquiring minds want to know! Here's one from a few years back,

Oh jeez, I forgot to check this thread before leaving. Sorry for not getting back to you Trike but you didn't miss out on much.

On the ride from Miami to Charlotte, the weather was perfect and there was no major traffic. The next 2 days up in the mountains and the third day of me riding bad consisted of cold, pouring rain. My waterproof clothing was discovered to not be waterproof, my phone was killed by the rain, and I was riding blind most of the way. Complete garbage weather but I made the most of it.

From Charlotte to Maggie Valley, I took some random roads up to the Blue Ridge Parkway and then rode the Parkway all the way to Maggie Valley. Lots of fantastic views and horrendous fog. At some points, I literally had 20 ft of viewing distance and my permanently, slightly tinted Transitions Visor didn't make it any better. My eyes started getting used to riding unshielded :)

On Sunday, I planned on riding the Dragon. After over riding and ending up over an hour southwest of Deals Gap in Andrews, NC, I stopped at a gas station and saw 4 random ADV riders there. I asked them if they knew were the Dragon was, which they knew, and I asked if they were going and they said yes. What a freaking break. From there, the 5 of us, getting lost some more, eventually ended up at the Dragon. Due to it being Nov 2, it was out of season and very, very few things were open. Our lunch consisted of Trail Mix since all the restaurants seemed to have closed already. I found out those 4 guys came from Corpus Christi, TX and were trying to do the Eastern part of the TAT. This is right after that Hurricane hit Mexico so most of the Central and East US was wet. They had heavy ADV bikes and the mud on their trails weren't doing well at all. They just gave up and decided to hit the pavement. I need to find out what they decided to do after we separated.

Deals Gap was completely empty. Literally empty. Not a single motorcycle at the Motel or at Killboy. No, no Killboy photo since no one was there BUT I did get one in front of their advertising sign on the hill ;)

I rode the Dragon both directions, not seeing a single car, but the drenched, leaf covered road had me riding between 10-20 the whole time. I found out during this trip that I much more enjoy the faster, longer curves of the surrounding roads (NC-28 was an amazing ride) than the Dragon or most parts of the Parkway.

I rode through wet gloves (lots of blisters on the throttle hand), wet boots, and 0 navigation but it was worth it.

I have bunches of video and pictures and still need to make a proper ride report but here's one of my favorite pictures from the Parkway.

Damn! Sucks you had such crappy weather. Good gear does make a difference. Usually that difference is in price but you soldiered through. On knobs, no less. And kept it upright! Well done!

If you can, come back for March Moto Madness and allow yourself a couple more days to explore.

LOL, good gear. I had a Scorpion Yukon Jacket, Held Air n Dry Goves, old pair of Teknic Goretex pants, and Sidi Adventure Rain boots. If that doesn't count as good gear, then I don't know what does. :p I became very good friends with garbage bags on this trip :D

The Shinko 804/805 tires are truly amazing tires at the price. I commute every day on them and ride off road on the weekends and have had no issues with them.

I'm for sure going to make my way back up there again. I don't mind the long distance ride for the amazing roads up North.

Yep, lovin' the Shinkos (have the 704/705 for now) and I've found them to be the best value on the market at this time. They are my go to 50/50 tire.

Let me guess, your jacket got saturated and soaked you from the inside out, top to bottom. Those boots should have been dry but if the pants were wet, it will eventually get the boots too. Interesting that your shield doesn't return to full clear. I was wanting one but apparently Bell has an exclusive hold on the Transition and I use Arai. I have a pair of Teknic pants but they are only water "resistant". After an hour or so in persistent rain, water finds its way in. My Klim pants... dry as can be.

Yukon jacket was the issue for the gloves. The material on the wrists got saturated which started pouring water into the gloves. The Sidi boots leaked water when stepping in puddles or going through rain. The pants leaked through the crotch, even with sealer on the stitching, and the Transitions lens started losing its tinting ability about 9 months in. Now the visor is permanently stuck in a slightly tinted state. I grabbed that visor since I couldn't find my full clear visor. I had that and my now daily fully tinted visor.

I've contacted Scorpion about the jacket and am getting it RMA'd.
