The 2023 Iron Butt Rally started today in Pittsburgh. I don't see a thread here so I thought I'd start one.

Official site including daily reports:
https://www.ironbuttrally.net/

List of riders:
https://www.ironbuttrally.net/2023-ibr-riders-2/

There are (6) S10s entered, which is more than I can ever recall. How many are Forum members?

Also, I didn't know where to place this thread, so I put it in the same subforum that had IBR 2021. Mods please move to another spot if better.

Fo those wanting to track the riders' paths, here's the public Spotwalla page from the official IBR site. First checkpoint is Tulsa. I imagine preliminary standings will be published sometime in the next day or so.

Leg 1 standings are up, and we have an S10 in 5th place - the aforementioned Steve Giffin 2016 Anniversary Edition.

It's early of course, but impressive nonetheless:

I’ve been looking at the spot walla page to try and follow along, is there a method to the numbering system on spot walla? Steve Giffin’s entry number is 53. It seems this morning on this spot walla page all numbers are in the 600 and 700 series?? Any help understanding this page would be much appreciated.

RE the public Spotwalla page - the individual #'s are intentionally randomized and continuously changed so that no individual can be specifically tracked. Has to do with privacy and safety from what I recall. To track a particular rider that person needs to give you their private link.

There's also a time delay. What your seeing is not real time. Not sure what the interval is. Probably an hour or so.

I still like seeing the strategies of how many people go where and what order. It gives you an overall sense of what groups of riders are strategizing, but also thoughts of individuals. One rider decides to go to Maine, someone else goes to Florida. Why? I don't know, but it's fun.

Steve Giffin and the Yamaha ST have moved up to 3rd overall in the standings after leg #2 concluded. The 2023 rally is concluding tomorrow in less than 19 hrs. from now! Go Yamaha ST and Steve! Best wishes for a safe and happy finish for all the riders who are still out on course in this rally!

If Steve manages to win this thing, we’ll need to contact Bob Hannah to see if he can send Steve over some authentic Hannah lighting bolt decals for his bumblebee yellow ST!!!!

Yes for sure Bob Hannah needs to be consulted should Steven Giffin -- or more accurately a yellow 60th Anniversary Edition S10 -- win it all!

Hard to say where the field is now. Would be awfully cool to have real-time scoring. Someday.

Really bummed for Steve, hope he is OK?! No mention of a motorcycle problem for him by the IBR folks? I guess we should find out (?) in the coming press release stories. Congrats to all the other S-10 riders. Huge props for finishing such a tough adventure.

I really enjoy following the IBR. I like to look at the bonus locations after they are published and if I see anything that interests me I will visit when I am out goofing around. I do not know how they visit some of those locations with such a time limit. It is a fun for me to go find those locations though just not under time pressure. I have to deal with that everyday I don't need that when I am off work and just riding!

Steve Giffin posted up over at FJR Forum and stated he had a crash on stage 10. He stated the crash was his fault and the S-10 was not able to continue forward in the rally. Happy to understand no serious injury and he seemed to display a positive outlook on the whole experience up to that point. Again, huge congrats to all the S-10 riders in the 2023 Iron Butt Rally!

I placed 74th with a conservative ride to become an IBR finisher, no issues, the bike did its thing, It now has 143K on the odo, (my previous rally bike '14 has 221K on odo) I knew and/or met the other Tenere pilots either in other rallies or at the PIT start. Jay Bolinger placed well and is a great rider and rallier. Same is to be said of Craig Phillips who is on Eric Vallancourt's old bike with the franken tank which may already have a previous IBR finish on it. I believe he has some inner rear wheel spoke issues. Correct, Steve's DNF was not due to the bike. The gentleman on the red Tenere from Ireland bought the bike prior to the rally to use. I think 3 of us used EAZcycles 5.25 gallon aux tank. All in all and in a good way there was no drama in the Tenere camp due to bike issues!!
