Does that make me a wuss?

I don't commute on the bike which means I only use it recreationally. I got the bike to go far and see new places. The easy pace of T mode for me adds to the serenity and opportunity to take in the scenery. When 2 up T mode provides more comfort to my passenger. I figure if I want to shag tires and be one with the road I'll ride my FZ1. Maybe that's why the two are such great stable mates.

Whatever floats your boat, I say go for it. I have mine permanently in S mode. I turn off ABS and traction control while off-road, and let Mr. Wrist spin Mr. Tire as he sees fit. It's all good !!!

S mode for me almost all the time with the exceptions being rain or off road.

There is no wuss mode on the Tenere. If you enjoy it in T then congratulations, you're enjoying your bike. That's all that matters.

I ride for personal enjoyment. As long as I'm happy on my bike it doesn't matter if the LED say S or T.

When I first rode my S10, "S" mode was a little twitchy. I'd always switch to "T" when my wife rode along. You give up a lot of freeway merging acceleration in "T" mode. This thread made me realize, I haven't touched it in a month. Your wrist will get used to the "S" setting if you give it a chance.

Yep, I too prefer T mode. 50+ mpg, 12,000 mile rear tire life, and a lot less wear and tear on the engine/drive systems. Oddly enough the roads don't seem to know the difference. I'm more interested in seeing new territory, or the same territory in different seasons. I got the S10 for it's reliability, comfortable ride position, 2 up capable, and lack of chain maintenance. 2012 model with 52,000 miles so far. I do my own maintenance. I aim to keep it for a long time.

That said, if I'm on an interstate in wild traffic or need to pass a slowly moving traffic hazard on curvy back roads it's 'S' mode. And I'm thankful for it.

Different strokes for different folks...

In looking back at my last ride (2up) there were two situations while passing a vehicle, where oncoming traffic closed a bit too soon for my blood. Hell, I had completely forgotten about S mode. My normal riding is 2-up on 2 lane highways and I think it would behoove me to try to get used to S mode, now that I am comfortable with the bike. T mode sure is smooth, but there are times when acceleration is a safety factor, and a twist of the wrist is a lot faster than shifting down. All your posts are good. Great subject. Thanks.
Cheers,
Scott

T mode is just as fast but is smoother and more linear. You just have to turn the throttle a little further. No reason to use S mode.

This is the most expensive and technologically advanced bike I've ever owned. Which means it's the first time I've ridden a bike with "modes". I'm lucky enough to have more than one bike and I laugh when I look in my garage and see my DR650 next to my FZ1 next to my S-10. I laugh because if I combine the first two bikes in my head I get the S-10 with its two modes and I have to ask myself why have three if the S-10 can pull double duty. I suppose it's because I can. I don't go through bikes like toilet paper. I research and research before I buy. Then when I get it I make them fit me to a T (mode, lol) and then I can't let go of them. I love my Japanese bikes.

Agree that there is no wuss mode on the S10. The right mode is whatever works for you.

When I first got the bike, I preferred T mode. With more miles on the bike, I have become comfortable with both. Now I switch back and forth depending on where I am riding. In my half mile dirt driveway with hills, T mode. I forgot to switch today and gave the throttle an unplanned big twist while standing in the soft stuff. More excitement than I had planned. LOL In the twisties on my way to work, S mode. Riding around town and dealing with traffic lights and lots of cars, usually T mode.

Have also learned that all I need to do to switch modes on the fly is close the throttle and push the button so it is easy to change to the more appropriate mode.

I try not to think about gas mileage or tire life. We only have so many years to play before we'll be sitting at home, waiting for a ride to our next doctor's appointment (if we are lucky). As a result, I try to make the most of every ride. ::26::

Other than throttle response the difference is small below 4000rpm, above it's very noticeable.

100% T mode. I know it's crazy but I'm on my 4th T mode program! It took a custom one to get it right, but now there is no going back. I have the Gen-2 "S" mode too but no need for it…well maybe in a pure drag race but there wouldn't be much difference. ::26::

I like your thinking on this.

I switch back and forth depending on how I feel like riding. I almost always run T mode out on the highway, bike just seems smoother. I never thought I would use T mode much but some days that's the one.
