I finally got around to playing with the traction control today. I found a nice, wide, smooth gravel road to play on. In default setting 1 I would nail the throttle in 1st. gear and the rev limiter would kick in and make that terrible grinding noise. With the TC turned off, when I nailed the throttle. the bike would get wild and try to go sideways. Not a good feeling. BUT, in position # 2, the fun factor was 100%. With the TC in #2, I could nail the throttle and the TC would kick in just enough to stop the wheel spin and the bike would pull like crazy in the loose gravel. I knew I Liked TC the first time I rode on wet pavement, but I didn't have a clue how much fun it would be on a dry, slick surface.

Howdy,
Try it on 2 on a dirt road, get your weight on the outside peg in a corner and you'll be sliding sideways like the best of them in perfect control. I've been practicing this even with all the bags on.

I think I watched your videos of Adventure riding in Chili? (Great videos)

And I'm not sure you dislike the Traction Control. Instead, I think you dislike the fact you kept forgetting to change the settings every time you stopped. :)
I actually was waiting for you to change the settings in the videos. Several times. It made me smile.

By the way, most of us have done the same thing.

I love TC because it can save your bacon before you even think about it. About a week ago I was in a hurry and passing a few cars just before a lane merge, from two lanes to one. The lead car suddenly moved left. I did also - onto the center stripe. With power full on, and cars oncoming in the left lane, the bike kicked out when it hit the dirty center line, but TC intervened gracefully before I even had time to react. In a blink I was around him and on my way. Without it, might have not been so pretty. Did cause me to rethink why I was in such a hurry.

An honest response. And a valid one too!
I'm not a beginner. I have been riding forever. Every day. But I've made mistakes and paid at times. This bikes TC has stepped in a few times in 30,000+ miles and helped me from paying for it. So has the excellent ABS.

I've changed my mind about both. I'm converted.

I love it in the dirt and have had a lot of fun playing in slower corners with a nice controlled slide. Tried the same with TC OFF and found that the bike slid much further and faster than I wanted to manage.

Saved my arse from myself one day when I was trying to see how it worked on road...so I guess I wouldn't have been in the situation without it...so I guess it's a wash???

Anyway, against better judgement and my screaming inner skilled motorcyclist I grabbed a handful out of a rainy wet road right on top of a tar 'puddle.' Hadn't occurred to me that wet tar patches are just like ice (as I never have to think about it...I just steer away from them and never try to break traction near them)...but the bike slid immediately and startlingly sideways. TC worked quickly but it still knocked my feet off the pegs as the bike tried unsuccessfully to highside me.

Anyway...I realize that it isn't a SS system and the S10 isn't a ZX10 or R1 so I won't be trying to get it to slide on pavement while leaned over. Just out of curiosity, however, has anybody tried it? ???

I am starting to wonder if My ABS is engaged I did feel it once on a steep hill with gravel kicking in and out but since then I don't feel it when I try to lock the breaks.
My Triumph's ABS light would com on when I started it and stay on until I pulled away.
I don't feel that kick in and out feel as I did the first time or as with my Tiger.

But if you can't lock it up, then it must be working. :)

Put it up on the centerstand. Drop it in gear and let it run a bit. That should cause an error and shut the ABS off. Bet the light comes on then.

That's one of the incredible things about the Yamaha's ABS system...

You won't really ever feel it "kick in and out" like the ABS set-ups on most other bikes. You'll certainly never feel the horrific pulsing that so many BMW's have when you *get into* their ABS threshold!!! ???

A lot of this has to do with the Yamaha's very high sampling rate compared to many other brands. You can see a bit of how they achieve this by their use of magnetic "strip" discs in both wheels rather than the "toothed" wheels seen on many other bikes. There's a lot more to it than just that, but that's a very obvious thing you can readily see that separates the Super Tenere's system versus so many others.

Main thing is - don't worry about it. If you had any sort of problem you your ABS light would come on, and stay on all the time, indicating a fault. Once more, this is one of those times you should definitely:

I found that with the ABS, the back has a definite pulse through the pedal that you can feel. The front brakes also have clear, but not particularly alarming pulse when ABS is working. That being said, the only time I've had the front ABS kick in is when I intentionally try to exercise it on a gravel road. I consciously tried to just "grab a handful" to get the front to trigger on a dry road and it didn't work. Part of that is probably that after a lot of miles on non ABS bikes, I just can't just stab the brakes.

You have to do this for about 20 seconds... then the ABS, TC and Engine led will shine!!!... then you start running and the engine led with turn off and you´ll keep the ABS and TC disconnected

Know i beggining to love Yammy´s ABS and TC (after reading all the posts)
