Hello all,
How many of you do indeed ride with protective gear year round, even at home? Here in South Alabama the heat and humidity are unbearable much of the summer so I used to ride in summer with just shorts and tee shirt like most others around here. A friend who rides a big BMW similar to the SupTen rides always with protective gear and used to rag me about it, give me advice and try to get me to wear it. He had a couple of wrecks in a few months time last year. Slipped in gravel build-up in an intersection, slid out from under him and broke his collar bone on a curb and rubbed his knee raw. Then later about did somethting similar. Shook him up a bit. I got to thinking what if he had not had that armored jacket on or knee protection, etc? Then I saw a video of people wearing shorts, etc, after they slid along the pavement and tore their meat off their leg, hands, etc.

SO NOW? LOL! This is what I wear and now that I have gotten used to it I don't leave my house without it on. I just don't feel right unless I am properly "clothed" and protected now. These are mesh type for warmer weather but has shoulder, back, elbo, and knee protection, etc. I just wear a tee shirt and my underwear under it and am quite comfortable with the wind blowing through it. I also wear a full coverage helmet. My britches just have rubber logo on them that says ICON or something. Don't know who made them (got'em off ebay) and my jacket I ordered from Flystreetgear.com, which has a zip in linger for mild wet conditons or for a windbreaker.

I always wear full gear. Pants, jacket, boots, and full face helmet. I couldn't imagine wearing shorts and it gets hot where I ride. (But it's a dry heat) ::)

ATGATT- all the gear all the time - was rear ended last May - me 15-20 rush hour traffic - other drive 50-60 never toughed the brakes. Broken back T10, 11, 12 and maybe L1, Broken Ribs, knot :-[ out and do not remember anything - But the only skin injury was a hole in my middle finger, right hand, through the deer skin glove.

All of the gear all of the time. I may open a vent or open the collar, but the clothes stay on. I have seen many accidents over the years, but at my age I do not bounce well or heal well. I need to have cards stacked in my favor.

Good Luck

Thanks guys. 2014Tenere, glad you were not killed. Did the driver pay up? Not sure about other states but in Alabama anytime you rear end someone, no matter what the reason, you are at fault. I hope they paid your hospital bill and for you a new bike.

Can't upload them now but got pictures of there proof of protection. Was ejected off the bike around 50 mph and only road rash was where went through a good pair of gloves on right pinky knuckle and had a rug burn on right fore arm from the friction on inside of jacket. Just about every inch of my gear had signs of road rash. When er Doctor took off my gear she was amazed at the lack of injuries.

ATGATT here.

I ride with a friend on occasion who wears a t-shirt, jeans, tennis shoes and a brain bucket. Just like my older brother once told me...I told him go out in the street, run as fast as you can and then dive onto the pavement to see how it feels.

Texas has a law that the only amount someone pays is the amount of their insurance - yes they paid - saying that they were 100% at fault. Now with that said - EVERY RIDER SHOULD HAVE UNDER INSURED AND UNINSURED coverage of 50K or more.

Maybe I'm being dense, but how does this relate to the thread?

I wear full protective gear all the time, but I do sympathize with you boys from warm / hot climates. Up here in the frozen north, we get maybe 2 or 3 days a season when I wish I could shuck most of it. But I don't. I purchased a "partial" mesh Icon jacket last year, and love it for those days. When I had my rather nasty accident a few years back, I remember hearing the nurses in the hospital say, after having taken about 20 X-rays, "I can't believe he didn't break any bones". I'm convinced that my full protective gear was largely responsible for that. So I stay covered. Let's be careful out there. R ::020::

He was answering a followup question from the OP.

I'm also an ATTGATT rider, which in the middle of summer here, can be a real bear. I have actually had people ask me if I'm hot in all my gear, and I use an answer I saw online many years ago...I'd rather sweat than bleed! In all honesty, on longer rides in hot, dry climates, you're better off not wearing a mesh jacket, but using one where you can control the ventilation, and wearing either a cooling vest, a moisture wicking shirt, or even a soaked t-shirt. They will dry out a lot slower than a full mesh jacket, and keep the convection cooling process going longer. Of course, keeping hydrated is also essential.

I wear full gear, just take out liners in warmer / summer months. I do believe it's been proven that wearing gear in very hot temps will actually keep you cooler than just t-shirt and shorts. As sweat will help cool you off if it's trapped rather than quickly evaporated, obviously this works while moving, friggin hot when stuck in traffic though. A wet t-shirt and a snood will keep you cool on a hot day under the gear. I also wear base layers that so far seem to work in all weather temps.

I've got two-three years left before my wife and I move to FL. I'm desperately trying to find the right combination of goretex/mesh to make that work. Right now it's looking like a Rukka AirMan jacket/pants set. Damn near 2000 dollars, but it's an easily justifiable expense because it hits Safety, Comfort and Convenience.

I have multiple pairs of boots, heavy shoes, jackets, pants and I used to complain about how many outfits my ex-wife had. :D

ATGATT for me, except I'm bad at just wearing jeans most of the time. Not much better than shorts.
But I will wear my Draggin Jeans with Bohn armor if I know I'm going to be riding....................lets say................rather aggressively. ::26::
