Looks as if the video has been sped up for playback causing the exhaust note to sound like something from Alvin and the Chipmunks. Hopefully... it is a race ready 450 I can put a tag on. Japan has basically handed the market to the Europeans (KTM, Husky, Beta, Husaberg) while they continue to push a dated CRF450X or the new (tagless) WR450 on the dual-sport public. Kawi and Suzuki have stopped making offroad machines (sorry...DR's/KLR's do not count) altogether. RACE READY! Decent suspension/ ground clearance, 40+ HP, weigh less than a metric ton and street legal. Am I asking too much?

I never heard it shift gears... And it sure sounded a lot more like a two-stroke to me... ;)

DCT or "seamless" transmission maybe?

never thought about the shifting. I was listening to the tone of the engine and trying to decipher that.

Starting to sound electric.

Then it's the loudest, noisiest, most clattering electric motor system I've ever heard... ;)

Years and years ago, Honda fooled with an interesting concept - their EXP-2 two-stroke. You can read some more about it at the following links:

http://www.motorcycle.com/manufacturer/honda/quick-take-honda-exp2-15170.html

http://www.motorcycle.com/manufacturer/honda/honda-exp2-14293.html

https://www.google.com/#safe=off&hl=en&sclient=psy-ab&q=honda+exp-2+two-stroke&oq=honda+exp-2+two-stroke&gs_l=hp.3...168370.173876.1.174554.21.21.0.0.0.6.290.3236.1j16j4.21.0...0.0...1c.1.12.psy-ab.CDt7TGuuWtw&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_qf.&bvm=bv.46340616,d.dmg&fp=48b7a4a8a5d0078b&biw=1608&bih=788

If you read those articles carefully you'll note where they describe the exhaust note as near pre-ignition "clattering", etc. OK, now go watch the video in the original post in this thread again...

Also, note that as of late various manufacturers have been rumored to be working on direct-injection two-strokes, most notably Husqvarna, and that Bombardier has all but re-invented snowmobiling with their direct-injection two-stoke powerplants. Here's a link:

http://www.cycleworld.com/2012/08/13/two-stroke-resurrection/

And then there has been all the recent press about Athena's direct-injection two-stroke...

http://www.athenaparts.com/eng/blog/2SDI-direct-injection-combustion-control

http://2strokebuzz.com/2012/09/02/athena-direct-injection-2-stroke-technology

Now all these others are interesting, but make note of the fact that Honda has been working on ways to make two-strokes "clean" since 1992, and they had a 400cc single cylinder two-stroke making equivalent power and torque to that of a 780cc four-stroke twin, all with less weight and less fuel consumption... Well, you do the math. And let's not forget that a two-stroke is much simpler, with far fewer parts, etc., and in theory should be both more reliable and easier to maintain.

Makes one wonder a bit more about that video in the first post now doesn't it? ;)

And..

Two types of GDi are used in two-strokes: low-pressure air-assisted, and high-pressure. The former, developed by Orbital Engine Corporation of Australia (now Orbital Corporation) injects a mixture of fuel and compressed air into the combustion chamber. When the air expands it atomizes the fuel. The Orbital system is used in motor scooters manufactured by Aprilia, Piaggio, Peugeot and Kymco, in outboard motors manufactured by Mercury and Tohatsu, and in personal watercraft manufactured by Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP). (Can-am)
But of course if Honda had done their own they will use that, assuming it's not a bit errm "BMW" IE Too clever and Fragile.

::26::

Anyway it may just end up being a CRF with bold new graphics and a free Acro thrown in.

Is this along the same line as outboard E-tec motors which prove as 2-strokes to be as efficient as the Honda and Yamha 4-stroke outboards?

From a direct-injection standpoint, yes...

Honda's EXP system is a bit different, but I imagine in the 20+ years Honda has been working on it they may have adopted some of the additional advantages of direct injection. It's important to note that Honda's EXP system does not rely on just a typical throttle valve or butterfly to control engine speed and power production. It varies a number of other parameters.

One of things I have always found fascinating over the years is that Honda has often been the company who has made so of the biggest technical advancements in two-stroke development and engineering. The EXP-2 is just one example... All from a company whose founder once said he would never build two-strokes! ;D

One of the things I have found fascinating is that both Honda and YAMAHA have had all this interesting stuff popping up over decades that has ended up in the back of the R&D lab never to be seen again.

I mean WTF, OMG. and all that.

Well, if it means anything to this... Honda is sponsoring Pikes Peak International Hill Climb and has a number of riders on 250 and 450 bikes for this year (kind of like what Ducati did). hmmm, i wonder if they are up to anything.
