hole in valve cover

That is what caused the hole. The pin probably came out or broke, pinched between the front wall and the cam lobe and then punched out the front.
It’s “just” parts at this point (probably). My concern are the little parts that fell inside the motor to the bottom. Or ‘hiding’ somewhere. Those are the small things that will seriously blow it up again if ALL the little parts are not found. I believe most if not all the cam parts (decompression) are super hard parts. So they won’t get crunched up and caught in the filter. These parts break other parts.
I would love to see photos under that valve cover. Can you post some ?

Hopefully you can get an exhaust cam and valve cover (I can’t tell if that hole is in the head). It might be “just” replacing parts.

That sure would be nice if yamaha picked up this tab………. WOW
Tabasco i will try to get some pictures - will go to the dealer on Thursday. I agree my concern is that there are parts/metal parts in the motor thanks!

JL: so the decompression pins would be part # 8 - 9 ?
There are 2, one per cylinder (#8 x 2)... there is another case similar to yours in this forum (without a hole, just a cracked cap), you should look for it and see if you can contact him to see how to proceed with Yamaha….

I wonder if #7 "end(s)" broke and that is let #8 fall out.... It's possible that #8 broke, but I dont think it broke in half. Also, if the shaft of #6 broke, that then could "compress" and let #8 fall out.....

All speculation.... this major issue is just interesting to me.........

If they dump out the guts of the exhaust cam, they should probably see the "issue".... If you find #8 in a whole piece that is good news. Possibly still sitting in the top of the head... There are oil drain holes right there in the head, good chance it fell to the bottom......

Hopefully Yamaha picks up this tab...................

Ursus, had a problem with his engine, but I think it is not the same as yours….in the forum there is another problem “identical” to yours “ONLY ONE”….the problem is finding it…..

GOOD NEWS

Yamaha Canada has approved to pick up the tab for all the parts and 7 hours worth of work (my garage estimates it will be closer to 14 - but who cares)

My Garage informed me that once they reached out to the local Yamaha Tech - the guy drove to the shop to look at the issue and within an hour he had approved the work above, for a couple of reasons:

1)Yamaha has seen this issue once in the past (not sure where: Canada/USA/Europe etc..........
2) The oil was new - has been changed about 1800 KM prior and I have 5 oil changes within 18K KM on the bike
3) All the parts to the Engine Head and higher will be changed !
4) My garage removed the oil pan, clutch cover and I believe another side of the engine and they could not ding any particles of metal
5) Finally and the most important both Yamaha and my dealer are confident that my bike will run like new !

To all the issue was a pin (# 8) per the schematic above that got blown out, they where not able to find it and another good point is that this occurred at start up and that I was able to turn the engine off quickly, could have been worst if I was barreling down the road at 70 MPH . The motor was never starved off any oil, there was sill about half left based on the readout from the little window on the side !

I wont see my bike anytime soon since 2 of the parts are back order - time to get a good night sleep!

I'm assuming that these parts are hardened steel, and I'm not sure if they're magnetic.

But if it were, me, this might be a good time to get some magnetic drain plugs, and I'd do a short oil-change interval after getting the bike back and cut open the oil filter after the change to see if any metal appears inside.

Really glad that Yamaha is paying to get your bike sorted!

Jekyl good point - I had already thought of the oil changes. I will do one at 250 KM and one at 1000KM upon receipt of bike like when I broke it in !
I believe that the oil pan drain plugs are magnetic (will check) - if not I will change them !

To all went to see the status of my bike yesterday - repairs are nearly complete a valve adjustment will be done and the whole bike reassembled. Attached is a picture of the engine head everything including the bolts to screw this back onto the engine have been changed. I took a picture of the engine head that shows the damage per the owner of my dealership a decompression pin was spitted out of the engine via the help of the crankshaft.

The dealer told me not to worry that my engine it will be like new when I get it, I also have to run it as if I was breaking it for the first 1000KM (technically I'm being asked to break it in) . I inquired about dumping the oil within the first 100 - 150 KM of riding the bike this spring and was told that this is not required (but I'm going to do it anyway) the dealer told me that they took the oil pan off to look for any debris and did not find anything.

Looking forward to getting miss piggy back in the garage - i will be swapping all the bulbs in the head light to LED including the small auxiliary bulb adding a dash filler plate with a voltage indicator installed just cant wait to ride again lost 2 months of my season last year.

Did they ever find the (#8) pin in the engine? Are they going to let you leave with out finding it? Or are they "guessing" it shot out the front of the motor ? That would make me very nervous not knowing where that pin might be.... I obviously would not care if it was on the ground....... but by accident it was not seen by someone, it would be my life on the line..... (if it fell down an oil journal and eventually rolled or fell down around the transmission... Or even get sucked up by the oil pick up... any of those thoughts give me cold chills. )
Im sure everything will be fine, maybe you already mentioned it, just wondered about that 'lost' pin....... Congratulations on getting it fixed and back together........

Tabasco - per the shop nothing was found neither a pin and or metal parts the hole indicates that the part went strait through. I have to tell you that I am nervous (Engine PTSD) but the mechanic/garage are confident of their repair.

Will keep everyone posted WHAT IS YOUR OPINION about dumping the oil quickly after I get the bike ?

IMOP..... I would ride it 50-100 miles and dump the oil.... There is alot of "open engine" for a long time going on.............. Probably not life or death..... just OCD........ .
