Today I'm having the bike towed to my dealer - my Engine valve cover blew a hole ! (see pictures)

The incident happened after +/- 175 Km into a 500 Km ride, i had stopped at a gaz station to fill up an upon leaving the station I saw a lot of smoke coming form down under so I immediately pulled over. I immediately called my wife who came to the rescue and my brother in law who helped get someone to two the bike back home.

During the wait I met up with an individual on a KLR who helped my diagnose the problem (his the one who found the whole on the engine cover. Prior to the incident the bike was running like usual - smooth as butter and when the incident occurred I did not hear anything only saw the smoke coming from the engine bay!

I AM IM TOTAL SHOCK !

1) Imagine if this happened on a trip ?
2) Have anyone seen/heard of something like this happening ?
3) Any idea what could have caused this ?

The kicker in all of this is that my warranty just expired +/- a month ago, not sure how this will be dealt with on the repair side - all I want is that the bike be repaired properly and it be like new again !

Interesting........... Was the bike running "properly" up until the moment you turned it off ?

Or did it 'die' on its own ?

The photo you posted with the bolt head and 'hole'.... what part is that / angle ?

Tabasco the bike was running like a swiss watch (had approx. 175KM on the odometer for the day) - stopped to fill her and as soon as i re-started the engine it started to smoke!

Tabasco the picture you see was taken by the guy to stopped to help my - but its a the top of engine below the valve cover.

FYI the engine was hard to start I had to press the start button 2-3 times and had to hold it longer than usual.

FYI as soon as I know more I will be changing the post to blown engine !

Mr Br, Nice catch and yes the whole seems to have been punched from the inside out per my dealer following their first look at my bike. I was told that their going to connect it to a dianostic tool to see if any error messages where genereate before it blew up ! They will then report it to Yamaha to see what actions to take next.

I’ll take a “guess”……. Decompression came apart some how. I believe that is just on the other side and is Turing in that direction.

looking forward to know what “really” is going on.

The hard start, especially after the bike had been running and was hot, does make me wonder if a valve was somehow stuck open. If a piston hit an open valve, that force has to go somewhere....

You can rebuild just about anything, if you're willing to throw enough money at the problem. And you really won't know what needs to be done until someone (you or a mechanic) at least pulls the valve cover and finds out what happened in there. If something happened that was catastrophic enough to knock a hole in the valve cover from the inside, my gut instinct is that the words "inexpensive repair" aren't likely to pop up in any conversations, but I would happily be wrong.

What year Tenere is it ? How many total kilometers on it ? Are you the original owner ? What’s the service history ?

either the head or valve cover , both possibilities are troubling . for something to punch a hole takes a fair amount of force and that alone sounds expensive . Muybig hopefully not as bad as it seems , but .......

I can't find your other post (referring to this hole)...to ask you if the motorcycle was new, or used. when you buyed…..and what is seen "live", in these marks that I made...(from here, they look like a weld internal)….

Dude its a 2022 with 18200 Km the only service are oil changes (5) all within the Mfg. recommended interval
Did you do the oil changes yourself??…is there a possibility that grade 60 oil was used??
