Hi there,
Just joined as I have decided I am going to purchase an S10.
I'm in my fifties and been riding since I was 16. Just sold my Tiger 1050 and also have a highly modified Kawasaki ZRX1200r and a load of old z900 & z1000s..

Anyway, I'm quite tempted to purchase one of the newer post 2014 models, but wondered if peeps on here who may have owned both the post and pre-2104 bikes could give me their opinions?

For me, condition is more important than age.

I love doing miles and 350 to 400 miles in a day is a good ride out for me.

Cheers

Welcome aboard! Your question about Gen 1 vs. Gen 2 is rapidly becoming the most popular one here, and I can summarize it thusly: If you can afford the price difference, the Gen 2 is the way to go. If budget is a concern, a well farkled Gen 1 will still bring a smile to your face.

I'm lucky enough to own both a 2012 and a 2017. Great bikes!
I ride my 12 all the time and with over 160,000 miles it runs better than new. The 17 is a nicer bike that I save for trips with my awesome wife.

Welcome from Swansea! I had a similar dilemma and went for a new Gen 2 as I wanted cruise control which doesn't come on Gen1, lots will have had both and from what I've read the Gen 2 has a better clutch basket and is smoother. If you go Gen 2 you need to decide between ES and Non ES (XT1200Z or XT1200ZE) the ES comes with a few extras along with the electronic suspension, in reality I should have bought the ES, I paid extra for pillion handles, centre stand, top case rack, all of these come as standard on ES along with heated grips.

Happy bike hunting!

::008:: ... welcome, I am also a newbie, just bought a 2017 Xt1200Z, I got a decent deal on the bike in the showroom otherwise I too would have gone ES as I am now sticking extras on :D ... only managed a few short rides at the moment but it seems really nice ... already stuck a Yoshi can on as I like the 'popping' and thumping ;D

Thank for sharing your thoughts and making me welcome.
As suspected I do need to go for a gen2....
I Plan on going to look at some 2014 ZE bikes I have seen advertised within and hour or so of where I live. None of them have luggage, but that's not a problem right now..
I'll keep you posted!

So, I went to look at a few S10s this weekend and have agreed to purchase this beauty. I had planned to ride it home on the day but the bank couldn't do a bank transfer, so I have to go back and collect.. (Which I'm hoping will be this Friday or next Monday).
It's a 2014, one owner FSH, datatagged, ZE spec with lots of extras:
Givi monokey panniers and top box. (Admittedly they are old E series Givis, but I can always get something different).
The monkey frames and rack are home made one offs..
Taller screen (plus standard), winglets, custom seats, crash bars, autocom, ring mount tank bag and sat nav mount.
FSH and just been serviced and has new tyres.
Comes with a printed service manual also.
ECU has been remapped. No extra power but a pretty flat and consistent torque curve and more importantly, improved throttle response in the two riding modes and improved MPG.
Also the suspension has been lowered 15mm - I'm six foot but with short legs for my height, but I can get both feet flat on the floor. (Which I can't on the standard bike)
<eeek!>

Nice bike. I just bought mine and I'm happier with it so far than I thought I would be. I hope you enjoy yours as well.

Collected the S10 yesterday from Norwich, it was swelteringly hot and the 200 mile ride back was pretty naff due to the sheer volume of traffic.
However, initial thoughts are:
Ace suspension - just floats over the road
Riding position is very comfy
Very lazy engine which is deceptively quick and with tons of grunt
Brilliant protection from the elements - not a single dead fly on my helmet when I go back. However, creates lots of whistling with my Shoei XR1100...
Cruise control is a f00kin godsend!
Although it's a tall, heavy lump, that feeling goes once on the move. Takes a bit of effort on corners - you have to give it power early or it falls in.

Will be spending a few days to give it a super good clean and detail and then hoping to get out on it a few times this week.

Happy bunny so far!

Bit of an update.
Needed to wire up the power for my Sat Nav and fit an Optimate lead. The sidepanels wouldn't come off because of the crash bars. So once I had the bars off I removed the fairing panels and seat.
The rear of the engine bay, under the tank and around the front (pivot) of the swingarm were covered in oily grot. I've clean all this up and in the process I think I found the cause - the little bung on the LH side of the airbox, which you use to drain oil. The circlip that holds it on was not on properly and oil was dripping out. I re-fitted that and also had a look in the airbox and gave it a wipe out as there was oil residue in there. (I was surprised how oily it was in there though. Never had that on any other bike)
I also removed the Autocomm system as I will never use it.
I also noticed that the oil is overfilled - which might explain the a oil in the airbox?
I also greased the brake and gear lever pivots, which were bone dry. (So much for the benefits of servicing at a Yamaha dealer)...
I'll get the bodywork back on it today and give it a good wash.

I think I'll invest in a rear hugger as it's obvious that one will help to reduce the amount of crap that finds it's way into everything under the seat area.

Ah yes, the tribulations of making a used bike your own.
::008::

There are two approaches to reducing the crap under the seat. The hugger is one and it's a bit pricey. The other is a bought or home-made enclosure to go under the rear brake reservoir.

Don't get caught up in the oil level, if it was showing over on the sight glass it's likely to be spot on!
