Hi there folks. Just thought I would drop a message in here to say hi & introdice myself. I`ve just joined the site, as my screen name probably suggests I`m currently riding a Triumph Explorer when its working. I have recently taken a Super Tenere out on test ride & I must say I was quite impressed especially after reading the apparently heavily biased UK bike press test reports. Before I splash the cash could any of you guys give me some advice on what too look out for should I go for a low mileage 2012/2013 bike & what known faults are there with the bike? I must say this bike looks fairly fault free but I have heard of this "hard start" issue but i don't exactly know what the details are. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Forget the hard start issue. It's not something you can look out for when finding the right Tenere. They ALL are subject to it happening IF the conditions present themselves. Pretty rare anyways. Just be sure when you go to start a cold Tenere, hold the start button long enough to start it. :)

Oh, and if you do start it, let it reach operating temp before you kill it.

Now, what to look for...........
If VERY low mileage, check for loose spokes. Once they bed in, they pretty much stay fit. But checkem.

Then, the ONLY other thing that I would worry my pretty little head over is the headlight sub harness. The OEM wire is barely heavy enough and is, in fact, NOT heavy enough to handle the increased resistance caused my loose bulb connectors or corrosion at that same contact point. Either replace that subharness with the newer and heavier one, or at least keep those bulb connectors tight and clean.

After that? Hmmmm. I've been on this board since before the first Tenere landed on our shores. Honestly, that's about it for anything that actually goes wrong with these bikes.

I know it's hard to believe. That's it.

Of course, there might be some Tenere out there that has been severely flogged and unmaintained. But it's NEVER been reported here.

Just find one. Get one. Ride one.

a simple hello, ExTriumphExp, as for Super Tenere issues:
my tires wear out, about two sets per riding season,
I have to fill it up with gasoline, at least once a day, sometimes 3,
I end up riding to places I have never been to before,
my friends can't go on the same back roads [shortcuts] I do,
and
off riding season, I spend too much time on the internet looking [obsessing] for the perfect must have farkle.....
other than those, this is the most fun I have had riding ever.....

Greetings ::008::

It seems nothing regularly fails, the hard starts are very rare, and easy to minimise the risk - and they normally start on WOT anyway, plus most likely to happen on your own driveway.

The only thing to look for IMO is general condition, if your not bothered about a 2014 with cruise control then any model year will do, I would go for condition and extra's over year / mileage - but bear in mind the 24k service will be expensive if buying a higher mileage example.

There is a good 2011 for sale on this very forum, check it out, I have seen this bike and it really is stunning ::008::

Welcome. Ive just done 20,000 miles on mine in one year with no probs. Never had the hard start prob. Dont worry about it. Just buy one. Although I dont think its the nicest looking adventure bie (in fact I think the Explorer is better looking). BUT the tenere is all i could afford. Negotiate hard. Because they are not 'trendy' in the uk you can get a cracking deal on a used one...and what a fab bke!! Luckily for us...most people are like sheep and have to buy the GS just coz of Charlie Boorman or something. These Teneres are the best kept secret kn UK biking.

Cheers for the responses guys, its kinda what i was expecting regards issues, i just wasnt sure what the hard start was. The other thing you have just remind me about is the the term you guys use (WOT) no pun intended but what does WOT mean :question:

bye the way Ive got my eye on a new blue 13MY for £10k on the road, best price i have seen for a new un. I have seen the white one for sale on here which looks a cracking bike. I ve just got to get rid of the Trumpet OR come to some agreement with Finance & dealer.

Cheers again guys, any info is gratefully received.

WOT = Wide Open Throttle.

Something that does remedy the hard start issue 90% of the time. Especially with a healthy battery.

That's the only time I go WOT on this bike. It's kind of a tractor compared to high revvers. So WOT is not common for me. I think I ride this bike very spirited, and have the gas mileage to prove it. But for me it's a ½-¾ throttle bike. Especially after the ECU reflash.
