Hi all,
thought it would be good manners to introduce myself. been riding about about 35 years mainly commuting into central London but I have also been a senior member of London Advanced Motorcyclists where I was on the committee and used to organise toy runs etc. I've also been a senior member of the Unity Support Riders helping to marshal large bike rides etc. Had numerous bikes over the years including Fazer 6, Fazer 1000, FJR 1300 but due to a bad back i've recently been riding several T'Max's as they make the perfect commute bike. But thanks to the criminal low life in London I've had my last two T-Max's stolen from public bike bays in Knightsbridge and it's simply not worth having a T-Max anymore hence my lastest aquisition of a secondhand 2015 XT1200Z with only 3000 miles on the clock. It came with fogs already fitted as well as heated grips and I'm told it's been mapped. It's a very different bike to what I've been used to but I'm loving it and have already done about 1000 miles in the 3 weeks that I've had it.
I've also fitted some daytime driving led spots which I think are fantastic and very easy to fit but I just had an issue with the Yamaha heated grips which I'm not too impressed with. Has my usual ride to work in the pouring rain and got soaked through despite my wet weather gear. got back to the bike in the afternoon to ride home to find the battery flat! long story short is that the rain must have got into the circuit and I suspect the switch, which shorted the right hand grip which came on and ran the battery flat while I was in the office. I'm waiting to hear back from Yamaha as my dealer suspects the grips are still under warranty but whatever happens I'm going to rewire them so they can only come on with the engine running as currently wired direct to battery which is not a good idea when you leave it parked in a public bay! I have wired the led spots into the lighting circuit so they only come on when the engine is running although I'm currently looking at fitting a power hub from Denali or Fuzeblock or a PC8 so any recommendations would be appreciated.
I'm hoping to keep super10 for many years to come.
Thank you for letting me join your forum
Norm :)
p.s. happy to pop a few photos up if anyone is interested

(is it the original heatet grips, where you can adjust from original menu, that is connected so it can heat with ignition off?)

Welcome :)
I'm not a Brit but my wife is, she is originally from Kent. I have been over a few times now visiting family and friends. I would have a blast over there on my bike. So many winding little country roads to choose from.

I have a Gen 2 bike with OEM heated grips and they look nothing like the ones you've pictured.

These look like Yamaha retro-fit grips ...................... https://www.flitwickmotorcyclesexpress.com/accessories/genuine-yamaha-motorcycle-heated-grips-inc-connector-cable-for-mt-09-2017/ Sorry to say no personal experience, my S10ES/ZE has integrated heated grips std.

Not cheap, but the controller is neat - hardly ideal to wire them direct as anyone can just come along past your bike & switch them on, indeed easy to forget to switch them off yourself. Hopefully your dealer can check them out & arrange to wire from a switched source.

Welcome aboard ..................... KEN

A quick PS re the grips. Apparently they can be wired direct as they have a 'smart function' that stops them depleting the battery if left on, whatever that may mean & however it may work I know not. Sounds like it's not that smart after all, so probably best wired from a switched souce that shuts them down for sure when you stop/park the bike. The standard S10 battery is a bit marginal for CCA at the best of times, so you really don't want any parasitic drain from grips, satnav mounts & the like.

Thanks for the responses. I didn't know the grips have a smart feature to shut them off before the battery got too low but the short obviously by passed this feature so as you say not so smart after all. I will certainly be wiring them up to an ignition switched feed so this cannot happen again and yes anyone can press the button and turn them on, even by accident, the way they are wired now so not too clever. I do think the control is the neatest I've ever seen for heated grips though :) I can also confirm they get hot, almost too hot lol. I did have a look at the switch and can't see any obvious way for the rain to have got in but unless the grips suddenly went faulty by themselves I have to assume it was something to do with the heavy rain I was in.

Welcome from Somerset!

I was born in Surrey, Ottershaw near Chertsey. I see you are near Leatherhead.

We have a small group of S10 based in the UK so look out for rideouts in the UK/Euro section of the forum.

Hope to see you soon.

cheers
Mark

Welcome aboard.

You have some aftermarket grips, even if they are sold by Yamaha dealers. Here is a thread about the actual OEM grips and how they are wired. With the exchange rate, they are not too much more than buying another set of what you have and will allow control from the existing switch-set and instrument cluster.

thanks for the welcome everyone.
can someone tell me if this rack is standard?
I'm thinking of fitting a Givi box but suspect this rack is not as it should be.
